Well, I dropped my Nikon 28-300 3.5-5.6G lens while it was on the camera from about 4 feet onto a rug covered floor and it now won't focus, the switch from auto to manual doesn't work, and there sounds like a broken part rattling around inside. Any ideas or links for self-repair? There's a part on Amazon that looks promising, dunno.

Hmm ... "something rattling around" ... not good ... sounds like you should send it to Nikon for repair. I've seen some instructions on Youtube for replacing parts on lenses, and it looks like you would really need some experience assembling and disassembling lenses.

Did the camera suffer any damage? Have you tested it with some other lens?

Well, I actually had the same thing happen with that exact same lens. My dad was using my camera and lens to film some video, but the tripod head failed, and the lens dropped 4 feet to the ground and broke. It was jammed up, and there was a piece broken and rattling around. The outcome ended up being that the repair cost would have been more than the price of the lens, so I ended up selling the lens for parts on eBay, and buying a different lens.

A broken FPC makes no rattling noise. Something else will probably be broken.

Thanks for everybody's response! I guess I'll sell for parts then. How much did you get from Ebay when you sold it, if you recall?

Ok, so I screwed off the bottom and this odd little piece fell out. Does anybody know what it is and if it is essential to the lens? I also found one of the connectors had come undone, but that's an easy fix.

Naa ... just toss it ... can't be too important ...

Kidding of course! I doubt there are ANY nonessential parts.

I took a third party lens apart back in the 80's, thinking that would be the end of it. It was.

I know I'm not being any help here, but that's because I believe you should either send it to the pros, or trash it.
