I have another camera and lenses too, but pretty sure I will let them all go.

With the trade in value of the A7rii and all the things I read saying the 7rii has basically the same sensor as the ariii would I be just as well off to keep the rii and buy the base a7iii winding up with a fast focus for sports and wildlife and keeping that a7r ii for portraits and landscapes.

I have a good collection of e mount lenses and ultimately will add the 100-400 but need fast focus first.

The thoughts of those who have owned the 7rii as wall as the iii series would be greatly appreciated.

Its not the same sensor. Its almost twice the resolution and sharper. As you say good for portraits and Landscapes.

Difficult to see because, well, lack of punctuation and run-on sentence.

He said same as the "ariii". In other words, the A7RIII. That is pretty much true.

Even so, twice the resolution of the A7III, which is what I think you were thinking, would be 96MP.

If you have needs the A7III fulfills that's a pretty strong kit. I'm contemplating such a move myself but waiting for certain lenses/bodies to be announced....

A7rII --> A7rIII is an upgrade

A7rII --> A7iii is a downgrade, unless you need fast action shooting style AF

The second point is valid for many, but the trade-off is severe.

Once you get used to the higher resolution, you need fewer lenses to travel with.

There will a future -iv and then -v camera body.

Buy what you need - I would consider lenses above camera bodies atm.

The -iii series are amazing, if you need these features. Personally, I'd pick the A9 over the A7iii, especially as prices are dropping.

But then again, I am still using the A7rII (it's working fine for me) and may go the A7rIII route instead.

I disagree. All the A7R2 is better at is for pixel peeping and making bigger prints. For general use the A7III is much better. You don't need to shoot fast action to benefit from the better Eye AF-C, better battery, bigger buffer, touch screen, joystick and much better adapted lens functionality. And for moderate print sizes or even whole photo 4K screen viewing you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference.

I only moved from the A7III to the A7R2 because I was able to get the R2 for nearly half what I sold the M3 for, and it retained some of the key features I wanted, like the improved high ISO IQ and silent shutter. But the usability and speed of the A7III over the A7RII is significant.

It's kind of like comparing a 5DSR to a 5D4. Unless you need 50MP the 5D4 is just a much better camera for most use types.

I did exactly this. Kept a7rii and purchased a7iii for fast AF. A year later I purchased an A9. I have to trade in a body and can’t decide which one! Currently on holiday abroad and which body did I take?...

a7rii

What dare you getting at ??

Thanks guys.....

I think I'm going to keep the A7rii and sell all my A mount stuff. Then, over time, buy an A9 and the 100-400 zoom and call it a day at my age 70.

I have the 35 2.8, 55 1.8, and 90 2.8 macro primes with the 70-200 Fe F4. zoom although the 24-105 keeps calling.

Too many choices and for whatever reason a passion for photography always leaves one feeling lacking for one thing or another.

OP is comparing the A7rii and the A7riii, which are both 42mp

I think your passion is more for gear :-D

In any case, can't go wrong either way. A7R2 is a beast, A9 is a beast, A7III is a beast.

Not a downgrade, just a different set of strengths.
