What is the best way to make screen shots on Windows 10? I have been hitting Alt + PrintScreen then it goes into the clip board. Then pasting that into notepad or something, then saving that a jpeg that I can post online. Is there a better way or program that can crop just the feature you really want a screen shot of? Thanks.

Greenshot (open source) works very well with plenty of options.

I usually use the image viewer IrfanView for screen shots, under "Options", "Capture/Screenshot".

There are multiple capture options to choose from.

The built in snipping tool or the built in snip & sketch tool (which will replace the snipping tool at some point). The snipping tool has been available since Windows 7.

BTW png is the best format for screenshots. It is a compressed format and will compress screenshots better than jpg and you won't have any compression artefacts.

I use Picasa.

Run Picasa minimised, and the screen shot is automatically saved to a Picasa folder. If you wish, open Picasa (a little tab appears) to immediately crop/resize and save as required.

Techsmith's Snagit software (New License is about $50 US), is aimed at the computer learning creators. with it you can capture both still and video captures and edit/annotate them and even publish them to various sites.

I use it all the time along with the Techsmith video editor Camtasia. I've tried all the free software titles, and this far superior to them. It probably doesn't make sense for a one time need that is unlikely to ever recur, but if you see an ongoing need, it's worth the money.

Agree with kiriak and mclewis… snipping tool - Quick, simple, easy, free.

If you need to find it, just go to the Windows search bar and type snipping tool. You can then pin it to your taskbar for easy access. I use it all the time without issue.

Here's a YouTube on its usage and features - How to use Windows 10 Snipping Tool

Another Snagit user here for almost 10 years, simply the most robust, easiest to use tool for screenshots I've ever used.

Win key + print scrn

If you want to take a screenshot of the whole screen and save it as a file on the hard drive in one step, then press Windows + Print Scrn on your keyboard. Windows saves the screenshot in the Pictures library (Screenshots folder).

Been using it for years. I wrote several computer books which were very heavy on screenshots, and I needed a robust tool with a number of features. (Like what area of the screen to capture, including parts that have to be scrolled.) I like that you can assign a hotkey to capture what you want and have it automatically be named and saved to the folder of your choice. When you do hundreds of screenshots at a time, you don't want a single unnecessary keystroke.

It ain't cheap :-) but it has a very useful graphic editor. I've used it for years.

Faststone Capture

Wow, great replies and many thanks to everyone!

See no reason to pay 20 bucks for what the free Win 10 snipping tool does. And especially if all you need is a simple snip tool.
ST does not compare to FC, you get what you pay for.

I have tried pretty much all screenshot tools there are and while Snagit is probably the best I chose Faststone Capture.

That said not one of the tools can hide the mouse pointer from input fields which is annoying,

Snagit in the version i have has a check box whether you want the mouse pointer captured or not in your captures.
