I thought someone might be interested in this. The lens has a bevelled ribbed front where the cap should be fixed. Unlike other lenses and auto caps (I have the one for the 14-42 EZ) it is therefore not a screw fixing but a push fit into similar ribbing on the inside of the cap.

I tried and tried, but could not get them to fit together at all. Finally I rubbed a small amount of baby oil over the lens ribbing which seems to have reduced the friction enough: the first time I did this I only covered the bevel, which only worked until I extended the zoom, but covering the whole ribbed area seems now to have given a firm grip.

It's not easy to get the two items fully aligned, either.

Hi!

I bought myself one recently, and yes - it was indeed rather tricky to fit!

Also initially I found it slightly disappointing in use, until I realised that the part with the code number on it should be at the bottom, rather than the top.... changing the position of the "hinges" - duuh....

Now very much easier to open, using thumb and forefinger of right hand - and about as good as can be expected, given the design of the lens itself?

I can easily imagine not noticing its presence at all in another week or two!

Luckily, didn't have to resort to a lubricant - for me the trick was in making the grooves and ribs on the lens match up nicely those inside the cap.... and then pressing down gently from above, working round going diametrically back and forth as well, so as to help it "settle" - although it only seems to go halfway down the length of those ribs?

Maggie, JJC makes two very different automatic lens caps that fit the 12-32mm lens.

The one that is only a push fit onto the lens is the JJC ALC-P1232, with 3 petal leaf shutters:

The other one that actually screws into the 12-32mm filter thread, is the JJC Z-O14-42B. It is a copy of the Olympus LC-37C for the 14-42 lens, but also fits the Panasonic 12-32 and the Olympus 17mm/2.8 lenses. It uses vertical sliding shutters, similar to a camera shutter. No petals protrude when open. I use this on my 12-32mm and am very happy with it. The price for both models is about the same +/- $2

I use the screw in version as well and it works fine on my 12-32.

I use this one too and am very happy with it too. I did not opt for the petal version because the 12-32mm zoom ring is known to be loose anyways (might come off if trying to take off the petal cap) and it seems like it'll be very difficult to get it on or off (to attach my wide adapter that I have).

I should note in doing research that there have been reports of vignetting when using the LC-37C with the 12-32mm, but I haven't seen any reports of vignetting when using the JJC Z-O14-42B (nor did I experience it).

Can it be used in conjunction with filters? I'd stayed away from that one cause I didn't feel like modding it to avoid vignetting, and wasn't crazy about the fit/bulk of the petal one after getting it... I've since gotten used to having a small CPL on my 12-32 tho (and I don't use it a ton either way), if I could still use that plus that cap I'd give it a try.

They have a new version that takes 52mm filters and comes with a lens hood that fits on the 52mm threads: Z-O14-42II that might work for your purposes. While it won't match the 37mm filter you have, 52mm is a far more common filter size so should be very easy to find filters for (although it'll obviously add more bulk).

The original Z-O14-42 does not have filter threads on the front. While I don't have a 37mm filter to try in between, the way the mechanism works is there are two little plastic pieces that are pushed in when the lens is retracted. If you add an extra 37mm filter in between, depending on how thick the filter is, it'll make the leafs open slightly because the two plastic pieces are no longer fully pushed in.

Heh, I actually gifted away a 52mm CPL last year after settling on 67mm for most of my filters (that small 37mm CPL and an ND for the 42.5/1.7 being the sole exceptions since I had them already)... The hood kinda takes away from the compact nature of the 12-32 but it's an interesting option nonetheless, thanks for the info/links!

Wow! I didn't find that, Charles! I'll try to find one, thanks for the heads-up
