Hello Folks,

Anyone using their Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art lens w/FTZ adapter with their Z camera, moreso with a Z6? Any comments on how well these two pair together? Focus speed and accuracy? Much appreciated. Cheers. -Norm

I used to. They work well, but honestly the 35/1.8S is overall better except at 1.4 :-)

Thank you for the feedback. No doubt, a native lens would be better, but I already own the Sigma. I have been wringing my hands on whether to get the Z6. I remember buying into the Nikon 1 system when it came out - I bought the entire kit and caboodle within the first week of being released. What a mistake that was, I lost my rear-end on that one. Don't want to do it again, so weighing my options and trying to keep my liabilities to a minimum. Cheers. -Norm

Lucky you. I bought a V3 with grip and adapter, the 10-30 zoom and 70-300 zoom and I don't think my rear end has shrunk in the least since then.

But I still use the V3, sometimes with the sharpest F-mount lenses like the Sigma 135/1.8 Art or the Nikon 200 f/2. It's a very demanding sensor.

Definitely agree with that assessment .

Thanks Marianne. I had the V1 and wish Nikon had done better with the lenses. In the end, I sold off the entire kit like yours for a couple hundred dollars. It really smarted, so yeah, I have cold feet about the Z6. In some ways, I regretted selling the V1 kit, it was super compact system with such great potential, just never took off. Cheers. -Norm

Is hard to tell the difference between my Leica Summicron 35mm F2 and the Sigma Art 35mm F1.4, they are both equally sharp, may be the Sigma a bit better. AF works perfectly.

Same here, v1 was a big loss ... but was it? I used it a lot even with it slimitatuons and now occasionally and is mostly used by my kids.

in the end I feel I got fair use for what I paid.

if Nikon pulls out of z, I leave Nikon for good.

I use it with the Z6. Sharp, accurate and fast.

I had one that I used with my Z6. No issues with focusing speed or accuracy. What drove me to sell it was the balance. A 600g+ lens hanging off the FTZ made the camera extremely front-heavy. I decided to sell it for a Nikon 35/1.8 G ED and am very happy with it. Smaller, lighter, yet still an excellent lens.

The Sigma ART 35 will work fine on the the Z6/7, but the balance will be very different that on a DSLR.

Very good point, I just ran into a picture with the Sigma 35 attached to the FTZ and thought the exact same thing, 'man, that looks unbalanced.' I have a fair amount of F-mount lenses and it would require some 'transition pain' to move to the Z. That is why I've been wringing my hands and contemplating. Then again, I am heavily invested in Leica, µ43, and to a lesser extent Fuji, so what is yet another system? :-P Cheers. -Norm

The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 works fine with the Z6 if you have updated the firmware on the lens. I updated using the dock before even receiving the lens. Quick and easy.

This image was using the combination - Z6, Sigma 35mm f/1.4, FTZ.

You've made this sort of comment before. Why? It is pretty clear Nikon has bet the future of the company on the Z series. Did the Nikon 1 leave that bad a taste in your mouth? I just sold mine off and moved on.

Norm,

What F-mount lenses do you own? I too own a bunch (35/1.8, 58/1.4, 85/1.8, 70-200/2.8, 70-300, 300/2.8, etc.), and don't have any issue using them on the Z. The 35/58/85 I own balance extremely well on the Z, and work great. To be honest, I don't have a huge desire to "fully transition" all of my F glass to Z glass, because I still shoot a lot with my D500.

The only Z lens I own is the 24-70/4, and I will likely get the 14-30/4 as well. However, at this time I don't plan to get any of the prime lenses, nor any of the f/2.8 zooms that will be released. F-mount glass works very well on the Z cameras.

Works great and is sharp wide open. I also like Sigma's HSM motor over Nikon's SWM motors used in their 1.8 and 1.4 primes. The Sigma motor is a bit more silent and feels smoother in operation. More noticeable when used with mirrorless cameras.

Sigma uses true ring motors which drive the focus helicoid directly.

Nikon uses "mini SWM" in their primes, which work through a noisy gear train and cannot achieve the same speed.

Thank you for your response, ijm. I have a Sigma 35/1.4, Nikkor 50/1.8, 85/1.8, 80-200/2.8, and a few of Voigtlander and Zeiss f-mount primes. My D600 is current at Nikon for the complementary shutter replacement. While I did say unbalanced, what I should have said was with the adapter it would add additional bulk that, to me, would defeat the purpose of going mirrorless, which would be to reduce size. If I were to transition to the Z, I would sell off all my f-mount lenses. I'm just not sure if I'm ready for that given the newness of the Z system. Like I mentioned in another thread, I got BURNED when I went full in on the Nikon 1 system. But having said that, I do like everything I read and see from the Z6. Cheers. -Norm

My GF uses the sigma 35mm f1.4 with ftz on her z6ii and loves it. She ordered the z mount 35mm f1.8 so she wouldn't need the ftz adapter anymore. However she is returning the Nikon z 35mm f1.8 because it's not as sharp as the sigma. Side by side comparison photos and she is correct the sigma is sharper then the z mount f1.8 35mm very disappointing and surprising.

No longer but I did, at first. Focus speed an accuracy it worked better than it did on F mount (With D6 and D850)
