Interesting video on large prints using M4/3's

Firstly, full disclosure, I don't have any m4/3's gear, I have previously and used to own the camera used in this test - the original OMD EM5, which I thought was a very good camera. However, I do still have a soft spot for Olympus in particular and I thought the test was a good test and very fair in it's summation.

Steve O'nions (yes that is his real name) is an excellent photographer who often shoots medium format film, which is why I follow him, and yes, he really does know his onions, anyway, see what you think. No surprises for me personally, but should be of value to those who might not know. The video is only 14 minutes long and worth a watch IMHO.

Climate "science" video?

Interesting, but how does that relate to large prints? ;-) :-D

Interesting video.

Not only is he showing the ability to print large, but he's doing it with older, cheaper kit: a 16Mpix Olympus E-M5 and cheap Panasonic 45-150 zoom.

I have made stunning large prints from M43. I don't worry about megapixels anymore. 20MP is more than enough and with the HR modes, there is capability to improve on that even further. I have a friend to claims he has even gone to 60 inches with these cameras, and he sells his work regularly.

Not m4/3 but watch his video on the Holga.

I really enjoy his approach, he's not fixated on cameras but on photography.

That's why I follow him, although he does talk a bit about gear, it's mostly about using the right tools for the job, he uses everything from 35mm film up to large format and some digital inbetween, which just so happens to be m4/3's.

And then in the end he says that FF will have better prints. Come on.

I know I can print big from a cell phone if I stack images also. Heck even Apple had a billboard with an iPhone image.

Thought he was going to compare against FF. When 3mp was “state of the art”, we’d bring prints to work to show coworkers. We decided 100DPI looked pretty darn good and 200 was very good (and most people can’t tell difference between 200 and 300).

Forgot to mention the G9 looks ridiculous (shown next to EM5 near beginning). Features tempt me but it’s even larger than I thought.

Well yes, he made the point because obviously someone watching it would probably call that out, that doesn't mean his demonstration was without merit.

Yes, well you can come on and make that kind of meaningless comment instead of doing what he did, and produce something of value to help others, it's easy to shout meaningless statements from the sidelines instead of being productive and informative, not very impressive though.

The G9 and my much loved GX8 used to be on the mocking list of Olympus fans for being too big , just recently not so much :-) The G9 has better build quality , ergonomics and feature set than the E-M5 . Unfortunately if you want the widest feature set you will need to look at the larger bodies

I see your point but some of the youtube photo channels do tend to contradict themselves. I once saw a video by a pro shooter telling everyone why THEY do not need FF { which is a perfectly fair point } unfortunately he had a Hassleblad MF digital camera sitting in front of him :-)

Yep, unfortunately...except I bet the EM5 mk3 will be “full featured” seeing that the current EM5 is full featured (high res mode that the gx9 lacks).

They were on the side of the desk :-) He probably had a LF kit just out of frame :-)

Given its limited utility I am not sure that missing high res mode is much of a loss , you can do multi-image shooting with any camera you just have to do the work yourself in post. Though I do hold a grudge against the GX9 for well not really being a GX9 { upgrade to my GX8 :-) } . The E-M5II was lacking in video performance for me which I appreciate a lot of folk do not care about . Given the shrinking market and the need for companies to make bigger profits on higher end gear it will be interesting to see where the prices go. Olympus has stated that it is going to be targeting the higher end
