I am a new owner of the Olympus Mark II and not a very experienced photographer. Can someone explain the L-Fn button on the lens. I have looked at the different discussions and I just do not understand.

Thanks!

Similar to function buttons on the camera body, but on the lens...."L". If yourcamera supports it you can assign a function tothe button.

its really meant to be a a customizable function button to whatever you desire.
L-button means LENS button. A button conveniently placed on the barrel of your lens which you can assign whatever you want so long as it's listed.
for my purposes i use it in continuous focus mode to lock on focus. you can assign it to things like digital-teleconverter or aperture preview. whatever you want depending on your shooting style. but that's for you to decide and no one else.

If your camera is the Olympus E-M1 Mk II, then you can use the L-Fn button to engage AF limiter. This is especially useful for Birds in Flight; and can be used to keep the focus on the bird rather than the trees.

I'm starting to call my recently acquired EM1-ii the 'ever giving camera' as I'm sure in a couple of years I'll still be starting to get to grips with a feature or configuration combination I've not yet used.
