Hello everyone

Somehow someway i lost the usb cable that comes with the sony A7R3 just when i need to update the firmware , does anyone know where can i purchase another one online? does it need to be the OEM version? I have a Mac, and was reading posts about certain usb-c cables with certain specifications like able to transmit data or something like that , can i use something like this? or any other recommendations ?

it meets the USB-C standard and should work. However, I would opt for a shorter cable. Shorter cable = stronger signal.

Your statement is true...but in this case, and assuming a non-defective cable, a digital signal at 6 feet is no problem whatsoever. Also, the data and charging wire sizes seem to be fairly generous.

Virtually any USB C cable should work as long as its not marked "charge only" where the data pins are deliberately missing to prevent data connections from being made. A default cable will always be data and charge.

Some people claim that using a specific USB cables matter, but I have used scores of cables with many models of Sony cameras and the only times I had hiccups was with certain ports on my PC, never mattered which cable I used.

With the older micro-usb, staying under 6 feet was recommended due to signal loss quickly with length, but the USB C easily goes 15 feet for data just fine, that standard is much more robust.

I’ve found it to be hit and miss with non-Sony cables, and I’ve tried at least a dozen through several firmware updates. This includes the factory cable from a Samsung phone that I would have thought for sure would work, but didn’t . Thankfully I had a bunch of cables, and I’ve always found one that would work.

Its a really weird phenomena. I was actually really worried about specific cables for my first year of a Sony camera. Then my Sony cable was broken by my daughter yanking it while charging her tablet. So I tried a cheaper ANKER cable I ordered previously from amazon and it worked fine. Then the next firmware I tried a different cable I had. They all worked. The only time I thought I had problems, none of my cables would work, I tried a different USB port that was on a different controller on my PC and suddenly it worked fine.

I guess using Sony cables is a safe bet overall, but it hasn't been my experience to be necessary.

I have seen that when you have a USB port on a PC that doesn't work, just reboot the PC. Usually that solves the issue.

I've used the USB-C Mac charging cable. Both OEM and third party from internet without issue when tethering to Capture One with a stable connection (can't say the same about the D850 - even using a separate powered Tether Tools with Booster), but no issues experienced so far with the Sony.

USB cables, where some work and some don’t, is a frustrating phenomenon.

Assuming that all internal connections are a present according to the USB specification, one could assume that all cables should always work. That isn’t true, of course, and here are some caveats.

As previously pointed out, an obvious one is distance… but at 6 feet for data transmission, I can’t believe that really applies here. More problematic is device charging with various cables and this is an entirely different beast. USB cables, even those that conform to the USB spec, consist of wildly divergent gauges of wire. In-spec I believe they can range from AWG 20 to AWG 28 where AWG 20 is the largest and can handle larger currents and with less loss. ‘Cheaper’ cables typically have numerically larger (smaller diameter) wires. My tiny Microsoft Surface 3 that I use for an e-reader and as a travel computer only charges with cables made with larger wires and has led to my purging my home of all the junk USB cables laying around as my Surface is notoriously finicky. I made a bulk purchase from Amazon to replace them all with decent quality cables.

USB 2.0 type-C cables do not have wires for superspeed or sideband and I suspect that is the issue here as this would impact data transmission. While a type-C USB 2.0 cable doesn’t have these superspeed/sideband wires, (USB) 3.0 and 3.1 Gen 2 type-C both do. They both look alike if they have the USB-C physical connector. Note that the Amazon product mentioned by the OP uses fairly large 22/24AWG copper wires (presumably charging/data transmission) and it is USB 3.0 compliant which would support superspeed.

It is supposition on my part that camera connectivity in this instance requires this superspeed wire and I think it’s an obvious possibility. I suppose its entirely conceivable that that wire isn’t even being used for superspeed but some other purpose.

I’m just wondering how many USB 2.0 type-C cables lacking this wire are actually out there given that USB 2.0 is old-ish tech and type-C connectors are relatively new.

I didn't update mine yet, I think I'll wait until the March? update which seems more comprehensive. Also, since I enjoy using my a7r3 so much, I will probably wait a few weeks after the update is released to make sure no serious bugs are reported.

Some USB-C cables (cheap versions) are really only for charging or have extremely slow data transfer.

Just buy a good USB-C cable with positive reviews. I always buy Anker cables.
