I just ordered my Z7 with a 24 to 70 F4 Lens, and I’m quite excited about it. What flash do you use? I use Godox with my Olympus system and really like their flashes but they don’t seem to have one for the Z7.

In general flash made for Nikon DSLR will work on Z7.

Godox V860II or light and compact Godox V350N are working just fine!

The 860 is pretty big and heavy. The 350 while not as powerful is reasonable size. I use the Nikon SB300 which is smaller, less powerful than the 350 but more powerful than a pop up flash would be.

As Volodja points out any modern Nikon flash works fine. I have lots of Godox but only ever use the Pro1 on the camera, i also have the SB500 with the small led continuous light for video. There is smaller but it is nicely in proportion i think

Interesting. Can you provide a link for the pro one? I’m having trouble finding it. I will consider these as well. Thanks!

OOPPPSSS brain fart

I meant the XPro not Pro1, I mixed the Xpro and X1 together. The Xpro is the transmitter to trigger the Godox flashes and strobes. I rarely have a flash on the camera.

... I hadn’t thought about getting a smaller flash as I use the 860ii with my Olympus system. But I think the smaller flash is a good idea and I’ll likely do that.
Just FYI, the 350 comes in both "TT" (AA; $85) and "V" (li-on; $160) versions.

The TT350 runs on 2xAA, and differences from the TT685-N/V860II-N would be, no CLS master/slave capability, only 270º swivel vs. 360º, lower power, no sync port, no external battery pack port, and no recycle beep. But. Much nicer size/weight or mirrorless.

The only one of these things that annoys me, personally, is the 270º swivel (in landscape orientation, it's 180º to the right, 90º to the left). YMMV.

It depends how much power/range you need. These most recent Godox flashes are powered with Li-Ion batteries that enable very fast recycling times. They have plenty of features and can be controlled via Godox trigger, work in groups etc.

Yes, V860II is heavier(430 g vs 290g for V350N).

But it also gives you 1.5s recycling time at MAX Power, larger zoom range 20 mm - 200 mm vs 1.7s and 24-105 mm for V350N.

Nikon SB SB-300 is the most basic flash, it uses 2xAAA batteries, has much less power and extremely long recycling time --> 5 s!

Some third party flashes are not recognized by the Z cameras. I have several but I am glad that I also have Nikon flashes (SB900 and SB700) because the third part flashes I have are only working in manual modes. I also have a Yongnuo radio trigger kit and they work well.

Why say no master/slave capability? From the Godox manual:

"Master Unit Setting

● Attach a V350N camera flash on the camera and set it as the master unit. (Page 40)

● M/A/B/C can be set asTTL mode independently.

Slave Unit Setting

● Set the V350N that to be controlled as the wireless slave unit. (Page 41)

● The slave unit can be set as A/B/C."

I think the Godox R2 stuff all works together. I got the tt350 Flashpoint model $85; small light, easy to carry. Adorama has been supporting Godox so they handle returns themselves, saves a trip to Hong Kong. I do think B&H has followed Adorama.

Manuals are available at Adorama and B&H.

I use an SB700 on my Z6, powerful and gives you 100% of the available functions, some third party ones might not.

Might be a little big for the body but it does balance well once you get used to it.

If portability is your priority you can also check Metz mecablitz 26 AF-2 Flash. It’s comparable to SB-300 with a slightly more powerful output. Again, 2xAAA won’t provide fast recycling times.

You missed a word there. I wrote "no CLS master/slave capability".

The TT685-N/V860II-N can be used as "smart" optical CLS slave/master units, as well as Godox radio master/slave units, and "dumb" optical S1/S2 modes (similar to SU-4).

The TT350/V350 can only do Godox radio slave/master and S1/S2, not Nikon's CLS/AWS "smart" optical system.

I use the Nikon SB-5000 / SB-910 and these provide excellent output on both my Nikon DSLR's (D850) and the Z's.

Nikon will introduce / announce (I read it somewhere like DP that they're planning to do one for Z - not sure when) one or more Z flash units (possibly compatibility with F) possibly for both stills and video work.

What would a flash for the Z cameras be? I mean, the Z doesn't work any differently as far as flash is concerned than any other Nikon body.

Putting an LED video light on it doesn't really make it for a Z. I could see them coming out with a smaller sized flash that might be more in line with the small size of the Z body.

...there is one difference though, which is the AF assist LED. That doesn't work with the mirrorless bodies, so if Nikon would make a flash with AF assist light which works on mirrorless bodies as well, then it would be a flash for the Z mainly.

No, but putting AF assist in it would definitely make it a Z flash.

Anything smaller than the SB-700 is just too small and weak. Already the SB-700 is on the minimum side regarding flash power.

I hadn't thought about the auto assist light. On all my other Nikon bodies the AF assist light only worked in AF-S mode and it only worked with the center focus spot selected. Since I shoot ONLY in AF-C mode and rarely use the center focus spot I've never used the AF assist light on flashes.

Would be nice if the Z was different.
