Hi

I am looking to upgrade in the next 3 months and not sure which to get off the A7RII or A7III. Generally I do landscape but am thinking of moving into wedding photography so would like to get the one which is most suited to that.

Any advice ?

IMHO the a7iii is better because it's faster focusing and other improvements over the higher resolution a7rii.

Though for my uses landscape and macro the A7rII wins out . For weddings I would go with the A7III , it is a speedier camera all round with better AF . The A7rII delivers superb results but it would not be my choice for fast paced shooting

A7III by a country mile.

I found the MP of the 5D4 to be excessive for weddings - so the A7RIII will be much worse. It's just unmanageable having file sizes that big, and brides quite honestly don't want to see themselves in that much detail.

20MP is the sweet spot in my eyes - so the A7III fits the bill nicely, leaving enough scope for cropping.

Ditto. I found the same with the D800...I ended up not using it for weddings.

One thing which was leading me to the A7RII was crop mode. With one lens on I could at the push of the button change its focal length.

The extra resolution of my a7r III turns prime lenses into zooms with a single press of a button. e.g.: 85mm f1.8 is equivalent in DX mode to a 127mm f2.7 (approx 20 Mpx file).

If I go back to wedding photography someday, I would have my a7r III + 85mm f1.8 on my hip, an a7 III + 16-35 f4 around my neck, and a 28mm f2.0 or 35mm f1.4 in the bag (to go occasionally on the a7r III).

i'm having a similar decision ahead of me, for wedding photography. and actually that is one of the very strong points for the A7III - with that one you acutally can simply change to crop mode with one push of a button.

with the A7rII this is not possible, you have to dive somewhere in the menu to do that. this is quite a showstopper for me, as i will use two bodies with batis 25/85, which double as 35/135 using crop - but only if this change is fast.

Originally got the A7iii, but then a received a good deal on an A9. For my wedding shooting the MPs are fine. The A7Riii is nice, but I prefer the speed of the A7iii and smaller file size in post.

I use the Sony A7iii. If you are getting into weddings you have many more considerations

Flash and lighting

lenses and general support.

The only reason I switched from Nikon to Sony was my business needs changed to more corporate events and more available light situations and I don’t need f 2.8 zooms

if I were doing weddings again I’d tell you get a DSLR the support from Nikon is fantastic. Join Nikon NPS when you get the credentials to do so. It is free unlike the others.

The nikon d850 or D750 is what I used.

There is way more to wedding photography then just a camera and lens

Carlo,

Either one would be more than good for weddings.

Not exactly wedding photography, but I have done quite a bit of event photography and much prefer the A7III. Sold my A7RII that I was using for that without hesitation.

The focus speed and accuracy are leagues better on the A7III. Higher resolution is pointless if you don’t get the shot or if the focus is a bit off (which happens regularly on the A7RII).

The camera processing speed for reviewing is way faster. Also the RII’s increased pixel count is moot at medium and higher ISO’s.

The A7III battery life is so good that you don’t actually worry about it - with the RII you are always managing your batteries.

There is zero doubt in mind - A7iii all the way.

I recently added an a7RII to my Micro Four Thirds kit for low-light no-flash event work. The image quality is exceptional, but I find I really have to wrestle with the AF. Compared to wedding work, my corporate events are fairly sedate, so I have time to change AF modes, etc., to make the AF work for me. But, I would not want to shoot a wedding with the a7RII as a main camera. From what I'm reading about the MkIII versions, it sounds like AF is faster and more reliable and requires less effort to override when needed. I think I read, too, that Sony will be bringing AF improvements to the MkIII bodies with a firmware update, though I'm foggy on the details. In any case, a MkIII would definitely be the way to go for wedding work.

You cannot assign this setting to a custom function button, so changing in and out of crop mode requires menu diving. Ugh.
