Since the other thread hit max replies I figured I would start a new one.

The Sigma 56mm is available for pre-order, so now we know the price: $480. This is about what I was expecting considering the price for the 16/1.4 and 30/1.4.

I updated the chart I made in the old thread to include price.

Looks like a great mid-range option for those looking for more subject isolation, but less size, weight and cost vs the 1.2 options.

Price: $480

Size: 66.5 x 59.5 mm

Weight: 280g

The price on the continent is €429.

The price in the UK is £399

Can't wait for the reviews and for the comparisons with the big, pricey f1.2 portrait lenses!

It certainly seems that they priced it _just_ right!

looking forward to the reviews as well, but have no doubt it'll be a hit!

If I'm obsessed enough with gear I might pick this lens up while I'm in Japan. Much cheaper there than it will be in Australia. Release price in Japan is equivalent to US $386. But should I get it for my GX85 or my a6000? The GX85 has IBIS, but I think the focal length would be be more useful on the a6000.

Thanks ! I've been more than happy with all the lenses I have now and it's been quite a while since I had a GAS Attack in our system. However, I think I will buy this Sigma new (which I didn't do since one of my first m43 lenses, the O45 1.8). I tend to buy all my lenses second hand, it allows me to cherry pick the good samples and sell the not so good ones with no loss (because where I live, shops don't usually allow sending lenses back).

But this guy got my attention. More separation than the 45 1.2, quite a bit shorter than the O75 (which I had, but sold. Too long). It might actually give me enough separation to replace the Samyang 85 1.4 I use on my Sony A7.

As much as I love my M43 Sigma 60mm f2.8, its just too long for me for landscape, casual and street photography. It's portrait length, so unless you are doing portraits I would get the Sony version. 55mm is a great focal length imho for APSC at 82.5mm, I use it all the time for street.

Unfortunately I mostly use Fuji (APSC), so am selling my beloved Sigma's off. Their most popular lens for many people is the 56mm Fuji, or 16mm f1.4, which I am sure Sigma's 16mm f1.4 would be equal to (and far cheaper).

Thanks for posting the chart. It appears that the best lens for cost and weight is the Olympus 45 1.8, with only a slight reduction in isolation!

If reviews are good I'll sell the Oly 45 and Sigma 60 , I'll keep the Oly 50 f2 macro because of the rendering .

For a travel set 17 or 20 , and a 56 are all I need .

i am a sigma fan... but think it is overpriced. The 30 is SHARP
I bought a 75 last wk. Traded the tiny 45 (Ihave a 42f1.7) and added $260. That pretty much insulates me from GAS (-;
There is always some temptation on the horizon in camera land Rashid :-)

Yep if you're looking for lowest cost/size/weight with decent subject isolation the 45/1.8 is a great choice.

The retail price is actually the same as the 42.5/1.7 (both $400), but the 45/1.8 is currently/often listed at $300.

The 42.5 has IOS and closer focusing, so it's worth considering as well. You can find either for under $300 used.

My first impressions of this lens were very positive. This price ends up being in line with the leaks at the time and probably what most people expected.

I believe this will be a good seller for Sigma, as it fills the niche of a 105-ish mm equivalent lens and nicely slots in between the affordable f/1.8 options and the expensive f/1.2 monsters. I just wish it was released before I bought Oly 75, which I am somewhat disappointed with.

Somewhere down the road, I'm seeing myself getting rid of Oly 45 and 75 and replacing them with this Sigma.

First reviews of the Sigma 56mm f1.4 are coming in:

https://www.ephotozine.com/article/sigma-56mm-f-1-4-dc-dn---c-review-32983

https://www.cameralabs.com/sigma-56mm-f1-4-review/

So far, they are being tested on Sony APS-C rather than Micro 43...but it seems the lens is excellent for sharpness, bokeh and overall image quality. Oh, and physical build quality too!

Although the longer Micro 43 equivalent focal length compensates somewhat...the Sony will still have a bit more bokeh than us, due to their lesser crop factor.

But the bokeh in the portrait samples of the second review look promising!

The first review mentions pincushion distortion, but then says Micro 43 should correct for this in software. Is this the case for jpeg? For RAW?

I have this thing preordered, but will fly through Japan in a month. I think I will put a hold on my order in case I can find one over there for less.

Thanks for the information about potential price of this lens in Japan.

Cheers

Wrong.

You are thinking about if the focal lengths were equivalent. But they are not.

Smaller effective aperture favors the APSC camera, but longer effective focal length favors M43.

Bokeh should be virtually identical. They have the same exit pupil. The background will be slightly narrower with the M43 though.

Fun fact an M43 camera with a 50mm f1.8 lens at a specific distance will give you a SHALLOWER DoF than a FF camera with the same lens, same distance, and same aperture setting.

i have the excellent panny 42.5 f1.7. would the 56mm f1.4 sigma be sort of too close ?

resisting GAS :)
