What don't I understand, how can my iPhone X have an 11 megapixel sensor but my OM-D only has 14?

There is NO WAY my iPhone has a sensor the size of a m4/3 camera. What am I missing?

(Much smaller photon wells, actually)

Is it an Apple to apples comparison (pun intended)? I mean, is Apple's megapixel count the same as Olympus?

You seem to be missing 1Mp from your iPhone X and at least 2Mp from your OM-D — my iPhone X had 12Mp and my iPhone Xs Max also has 12Mp (though larger ones), and my OM-Ds have all had either 16Mp or 20Mp.

Of course not - your Oly m4/3 has about 1/3 more more physical pixels (photo-receptive sites) on its sensor than your phone.

But unlike sensor's pixel digital data readout, which has no physical size, the sensor's physical pixels can vary hugely in their dimensions - tiny ones on the phone, and considerably larger ones on the Oly.

I'm sure that Seri can find the exact dimensions of the two sensors' individual pixels if you're interested...

Example: the Nokia 808 released in 2012 had 41 megapixels.

HIHIHI .... ab beginner-beginner-question ;-)

At first, the sensor in a phone us much much much smaller than that one in your Olympus. And this much much much smaller sensor has more megapixel - jeeaaahhh. So each pixel is realy tiny ....

That does not matter in good light-conditions so that every pixel gets enough light to deliver a good signal - that's why this phones take realy good pictures in good conditions. But as soon as there is few light, you need to play with apartures or you need faster shutter-times, different lenses, realy good RAW or something like this a real camera can do much more than a phone.

Although the current phones can take really good pictures! And they are realy good because you always have one with you! But by far not as good as real cameras (but enough for most)

That's like you would implement a 600 HP-engine in a light and small car like a Smart. Be sure, that a BWM with 140 HP is much better, comfortable, safer ....

Another customer that means, pixel = quality. Dont't believe in this marketing-gag.

It's very easy to sell Megapixels to people that don't understand photography.....

Completely wrong!
