Hey guys, so I know the P1000 is aimed for users wanting long-range telephoto photography/video but I wondered how well would it do for medium close-up portrait photography and shot a few stills of my daughter....I was surprised the shots came out decently.

(My daughter was holding a tiny Litra Cube to illuminate herself at arms length as the sun was setting and the ambient light was low.)

Thank you Gus.

If anyone cares to know about the tiny light- here's a link for info.
(I have NO affiliation with them- just thought I'd post as it's used in these images.)

Thanks for the light link... couple of questions.. how do you set WB using the light?

In these shots, the background is ambient and she is lighting herself handheld? Is there brightness control on the light, or is she just turning it till you tell her that there is enough light for the camera metering?

I hope these make sense

Gus

I used autoWB and the camera did a decent job figuring out the lighting mix. Raw would have been much better for post WB adjustments- but these were all jpeg shots.

As for the Litra Torch itself- it has 3 power levels as well as a strobe setting- we simply used the lowest power setting and it provided enough light to work well. The background is simply ambient light as the sun was already setting.

Great portraits, and your daughter is lovely. That little litra light is interesting...have to check that out! In any case, the P1000 seems to work beautifully for portraits.

Great shots. This is the kind of stuff I like. It shows the P1000's versatility. I saw some wide angle landscape shots from one of the pros and they were beautiful as well. In the right hands this camera gives really amazing results.

Very impressive...

My constructive comments would be:

- Try to find a less busy background.

- Grading is a mater of taste so take this as you wish but I would have opted for a bit more contrast. The problem with this HDR look is it leaves the image looking a bit flat.

- Wow, she's got a career in beauty/fashion! ;)

These were shot in the backyard during evening so I didn't have much choice for background bokeh.

There's no HDR going on- it's simply the look the Litra gives.

Thanks for the criticism....it does help and is appreciated.

These are excellent portraits! Way better than some of Nikon's own samples.

Maybe it's just me, did you notice there is a slight yellow cast going on?

Nevertheless I'm sure this can be corrected in posts.
