Ha,Hi Sherman,Mine arrived today. It's a bit of a hippo, and I've just begun to compare it to the P900, however I did want to suggest buying two items
1. 150mm Arca-Swiss compatible Quick Release plate
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Z40X42M
2. 77mm lens hood
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072P19GHC
The QR plate will permit you to balance the camera on a tripod.
If you use the 2nd hole in the plate for the 1/4" mounting screw, then as shown in the picture below, the front end of the plate rests on a protrusion which supports the front of the camera without impinging on the front adjustment dial. That will minimize the torque on the camera's tripod socket.
I don't yet know what to do about portrait mode shots, but this seems like a decent solution for landscape orientation.
The lens hood does vignette at w/a, but I don't plan to use the P1000 for wide angle shots anyway. It does an excellent job of protecting the lens from fingerprints. I've had a similar item on my P900 for several years and it works very well.
Hope this is helpful
I've just bought a P1000, and followed your advice, bought the above plate. These will be put on a tripod. However, the tripod has a quick release plate of its own. I tried many configuration to put the two plates together, without any success. Any idea? Thank you so much.

You can get an Arca-Swiss-compatible clamp like the one below. Remove the included screw and fasten your tripod's QR plate to the clamp. Then you can use the new clamp to grab the long plate.
(This is one of many similar items available from Amazon, eBay, etc)
