Do all EF lenses work with EF-M adaptor?

Hi,

Although the native EF-M lenses are quite low in number, the vast number of the EF lenses could make the M series attractive for someone coming from m43. However does the EF-EFM adapter work with all EF lenses?

Thank you

Yes, as far as I know.

There are one or two tamron lenses that have issues.

All current production EF lenses should work with the M5, M6, M100, and M50. The older M3 is incompatible with a long list of out of production EF lenses as well as a couple current lenses like the EF 50mm f1.4

I have not seen a similar list for the more recent M system cameras, but I would assume some of the really old lenses might not work right. Third party EF lenses, especially those from Tamron, have a VERY spotty record on compatibility and are often "broken" by newer bodies.

I have run into the situation where an old discontinued EF lens from the film era did not work with my EOS 70D (it worked on my friend's EOS D60 from 2002) so it is not suprising that some of these old EF lenses are not compatible with the the EOS M series cameras.

I was mainly thinking about these ultra zooms from Sigma and Tamron...e.g the 16-300...

Oddly enough, I've used the M3 with quite a few of those lenses (24mm f2.8, 35mm f2, 50mm f2.5 and 1.4, 135mm SF) and although they ar3slowto focus, they do work.

Will try the ones I still own on the M6 when I get home after the weekend. And with a couple of others on that list, too, if I can dig them out.

All but one... the Canon MP-E 65mm F/2.8 1-5x MACRO lens (notice how there's no EF in front of the title of the lens) is openly stated by retailers as "not compatible with the EOS M".... the thing is, the EOSM cameras can be mounted directly to telescopes for Manual Focus use... and this is a Manual Focus only lens. In theory it ought to work. But the retailers state that it does not. It also uses an EF mount. So WHY doesn't it work with an EOSM camera? Would someone care to confirm?
.

Would someone with this lens care to let us know if it works with the EOSM cameras or not?

It could be that they are just referring to the EF-M mount and with the adapter it does work?

Autofocus does not work when using the Yongnuo 85mm f1.8 or the Yongnuo 100mm f2.0 lenses on EOS M cameras.

I've found that the older Sigma 18-50 EX DC is iffy with the adapter.

Hi Marco,

Unfortunately in this day and age a lot of (often incorrect) info just gets parroted from website to website, without people actually verifying whether or not that info was in fact correct (or Not, as is the case here).

I can see how this particular string of mis-information started though, and it is indeed partly Canon's own fault. If you look at one of Canon's EU Web Pages for this lens, it states that there is "Guaranteed Compatibility With" [the following bodies]... And the list does not include any EOS-M cameras! (note: there are a lot of other notable bodies missing from the list also).

But it looks like the website you've posted the screen-grab from has turned this somewhat vague information into not suitable for EOS-M.

Which couldn't be further from the truth, as folks have been using this lens on EOS-M cameras from the very beginning (including myself on the EOS M5)...

Canon MP-E 65mm on the Canon EOS M5 (with Canon EF adapter). 1:1 Macro Ratio, f/11.
Canon MP-E 65mm on the Canon EOS M5 (with Canon EF adapter). 1:1 Macro Ratio, f/11.

Canon MP-E 65mm on the Canon EOS M5 (with Canon EF adapter). 5:1 Macro Ratio, f/4.
Canon MP-E 65mm on the Canon EOS M5 (with Canon EF adapter). 5:1 Macro Ratio, f/4.

This lens is an absolute gem, and one of the reasons I switched from Nikon SLRs to Canon DSLRs way back when. And if Canon wants to continue selling any of these (uniquely capable) lenses to the ever-increasing mirrorless market segment in the future, then they best clarify their marketing info!

ps. The reason none of Canon's manual focus-only lenses bear the EF moniker is that EF stands for "Electro Focus" and thus wouldn't apply (I'm sure Marco you've known this, and forgotten it a million times already by now! :-) ). R2

Exactly. And interestingly enough, the Canon website does in fact list the adapter as a compatible accessory for the MP-E lens.

This is exactly the reply and feedback I was hoping to see. It didn't make a lot of sense that this lens wouldn't operate on an EOS M camera. Good to see. Canon need to go over their advertising literature because this oversight would have cost them a few sales from creative minded photographers.
