artifacts on instagram photos

Hi,

I've just noticed all my photos uploaded to Instagram have strange artifacts. There are long horizontal rectangles or squares, especially at darker areas, also seems most likely in blue color. I see other people's photos or mine ones shoot with smartphone, so there is nothing similar. But mine from sony 6500 look awful.

Any advice?

Could you link some examples?

Are you using out-of-cameras JPEGs or are you editing the photos?

What quality setting are you using for making the JPEGs?

Instagram is not a high quality image host. When you upload photos, they get turned into low resolution jpegs with a lot of artifacts. I've also seen color shifts when uploading. This is because Instagram uses a highly compressed jpeg engine. Instagram is cool for quickly sharing pictures, getting public exposure, sharing with friends, or as a general overview of your work, but it is NOT a high quality host to display your work on. If you want to show high quality images, you would have to upload to a host that doesn't reprocess and compress files, like Flickr. Nothing wrong with Instagram, it just has a different purpose than a professional image host. Hope this helps!

I understand what you are saying - my point is there are many other photos made by smartphones which have a bit of grain maybe, but not so heavy degradation as mine.
