Will we ever see a proper compact A7 body without the bulging viewfinder

Because I would buy it in an instant. Without it I am not prepared to commit to the Sony full frame system. I merely find it potentially attractive while sitting on the fence and viewing it from a distance.

The system already has several compact lenses, almost pancakes, but no corresponding compact full-frame body. I rarely need/use a viewfinder and I do not want to pay for something that is not just redundant to me, but actually ergonomically inconvenient.

Just shave off the EVF bulge already Sony, how hard can it be.

Sony a6500 is available.

Sony does need a wider array of body styles. I don't know that there's a huge market of folks looking to buy a 42MP body only to use with compromised compact lenses though. I don't think the A6500 suggestion is off base.

They make the RX1R. It's a compact body with a popup viewfinder, FF sensor.

I don't think they'll ever make an a7 style camera without a viewfinder. Ever.

took me all of 15 minutes to realize the camera I rented to test that didn't have an evf was a pia to use under many different circumstances - and why you'd do that to a ff on top of it... no thanks, far too gimped if you remove it.

You can buy a Leica M.

The original A7 is amazingly small and light. Smaller than some M4/3 cameras. Don't know if removing the evf would reduce size much.

And we're always paying for features we don't use. Lots of bargain used A7's out there.

Nothing compromised about the compact lenses I'm using (unless you're comparing them to no-holds-barred Zeiss Otuses or something. All lenses are somehow "compromised" anyway).

And, yes, I am using 42mp.

I'd love to eliminate the EVF hump (aka pseudo-pentaprism), but not the EVF itself.

yes i would like to buy FF camera in a6500 or rx1rii body

thats would be great
i use an a6500 and would love a 42mp sensor for it. Love the small a6500 "rangefinder" footprint, ok with the ergonomics and would appreciate the versatility/IQ of the a7riii sensor. Still, I don't think that there is sufficient demand at this time for such a combination.

Eliminate the hump, but not the EVF (aka "rangefinder style").

Makes it a lot easier to put and remove the camera from the bag.

I would be interested in a pared-down, more compact body option, as would others.

But it is not my biggest overriding priority in the full-frame system. Therefore I have been enjoying the A7 series for 4 1/2 years.

I have my old EOS M for those occasions where I want something nice and compact. (Not the latest & greatest but the IQ is more than sufficient for anything I ever plan to print.)

I've worked in sales a long time. Everybody says it's a great idea or they would be interested - until they are asked to spend their money....

Sony has, what, SEVEN FF camera bodies that they still sell. Not counting the RX

I think you would lose the ergonomics of the camera. I switched from the NEX/A6XXX cameras because of the EVF on the side. Good for a rangefinder but not an SLR. Still use the NEX 5R with the viewfinder which attaches center-top.
