Dell Support and Assist are no longer working. I can't even access the support page as I've been able to do in the past. Is that because I didn't opt for an extended warranty? Or is it caused by the most recent W10 update?

Will Microsoft update the bios, important drivers, etc? If so, I don't care about Dell Assist.

I don't know about Assist, I've deleted all the OEM utilities from our Dell laptops. But in the past I've been able to access their support webpages long after the warranty expired.

Microsoft cannot update the BIOS, that's a matter for the PC/motherboard maker, Dell.

For drivers, yes, but see this:

My Dell Assist is working. Windows 10,Home updated through 1803. I do have the service contract though.

Re-install Dell Assist and it "should" work...good luck..

I've been using Dell Assist for years, sometimes it "disappears" or won''t work, I've re-installed it a few times, it always worked afterwards...

i don't think it is gonna help you but it has been quite a while since i stopped purchasing OEM pcs, simply for that reason--they are nowhere to be found when you need them ;-) i have been building my own desktops for the last 15 years. this way i can select hardware/software according to my budget. you can find good quality parts for reasonable prices that are far better than what these stinkin' OEMs offer. good luck with your search.

I found 2-3 Dell Assists on my computer (the latest w10) and uninstalled them all. However, The Dell Update-SupportAssist Update Plugin won't uninstall.

I have this other Dell stuff. Should I uninstall all that I'm able?

When I go to the Dell laptop support page, it requires that I enter my service tag; when I did it forced me to download the Support Assist app again. I can't simply go to the support/drivers page.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks everyone for your input!

Odd. Try this:

Don't enter the service tag. Do a web search for your particular model #; in my case, I search for Dell Inspiron 7569. The search returned Dell links to support pages. Like:

which gives me a list of support choices.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks everyone for your input!
I hope that helps.

Fotograffic, I have not used the Dell Assist in a very long time. I checked and it is nowhere on my computer. I have a XPS 8500 desktop, running Windows 10, pro. I have no problem going to the Dell support page entering my service tag and accessing the drivers for my computer.

I don't know which browser you're using, but I tried with Chrome and Edge and had no problems accessing the drivers and downloads on the left side of the page. You might try going to the site using 'incognito mode', might help.

It is important to get to the driver page as that is where the bios updates are to inoculate your computer against Spectre with Dell's bios update. I hate to say it, but if you can't access the page, you might have to call Dell to get it straightened out.

Here's the page I used to get to the driver page:
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04

Good Luck!

If I enter my computer model instead of using auto detect or entering the service tag, I'm brought to the drivers and downloads page for my model, it seems I might be able to bypass being forced to download Support Assist.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to try this until tomorrow. Will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again everyone for your continued help!

Just read this thread. I had Dell support Assist on my Dell XPS Laptop 13 9350 running the latest version of Windows 10. It was doing something weird, I can't remember what. I uninstalled it and everything was fine, but now I can't reinstall it. I was trying it with the service tag and just now followed the just type in model number here, but it doesn't seem to want to let me check drivers without Support Assist. I have tried to download it, but I keep getting an error message saying it can't install it because of an error, maybe due to an Internet connection, but the Internet connection is fine. the computer is still under warranty. I have been living just fine using the computer for hours on end everyday, but I don't like it when things aren't working right. I will give Dell a call, but if anyone else has a clue, I would be interested in advice. Is there something else running that could give it the erroneous idea that there is an internet connection problem???

Just go to this site and enter your service tag http://www.dell.com/support/home/uk/en/ukbsdt1
This worked! Thank you.

I haven't downloaded any drivers yet. So many are listed and I don't understand most.

This is the only one listed as urgent right now:

Intel Management Engine Interface Driver
Chipset April 11, 2018

It lists several other non-urgent things such as the Bios Intel Serial IO Driver, camera and wif-fi drivers, and Realtek Memory Card Reader Driver all dated mid-May 2018.

Do I really need to update any and all these drivers if my laptop is running smoothly?

And getting back to a question I've asked many times in the forum since buying a W10 laptop, how does the average, non-technical person understand things like this:

To ensure the integrity of your download, please verify the checksum value.

I'd probably not bother with the others unless I had a problem with that device.

Unfortunately, the general, honest, short answer to your question is: you don't. Unless you're willing to spend a lot of time learning a bunch of stuff most people aren't interested in. It is easier nowadays than it used to be; "Google is your friend."

That's why nontechnical people need technical people around in an increasingly technical world. :-)

(Specifically, that's a means of verifying that the file was downloaded correctly and wasn't altered along the way. I generally ignore that unless a problem occurs.)

Perhaps the easiest, non-techy way, is having 7-Zip installed.
With it, there will be a checksum option added to the right-click context menu.
Choose the one you want, or get a variety of checksums by clicking the "*".
The generated checksum can then be compared to the one supplied.

I loved 7-zip and had it installed on all my PCs. However, I got nervous after reading of numerous security problems in recent years, and removed it. Just FYI, and as far as I know the current version is OK.

Monsieur Patco, who are you that are so wise in the ways of science? [Monty Python, Holy Grail, witch scene]

I've always used the Linux command line, but this is easier! Thanks.

P.S. My wife still has HP Support Assistant, and it doesn't seem of much use either, however it hasn't outright failed, as far as I know. I feel it's mostly a way for HP to sell printer ink.

Good point!
I should have added, "Be sure to download the latest version from the official source":

Thanks for the interesting info Patco! To be honest, I've been computing for more than three decades and only vaguely recall the words checksum value. Guess it's because, whatever it is, I've never needed to check checksum. :0
