Has anyone used the LAEA3 adapter with only a-mount SSM lenses on the current generation or mirrorless?

In other words, a lens like the Sony 70-400, or the a-mount 24-70/2.8 -- First generation SSM lenses, with an A9, A7riii or A7iii? How well or poorly has it worked?

Or does one have to really use an a-mount SSMII lens for good autofocus speed and reliability?

Yes, my entire A mount line up was adapted with the LA-EA3 and 4.
They work very well on the third gen. Eye AF and autofocus work great
What is required for Eye AF? I find conflicting reports in my research online - some people say it doesn't work on the LA-EA3...

Took out my LA-EA3 just for you, Eye AF works on my A7III not my A7II. Works on both Sony and Tamron A-mount lenses (I don't own any other brands for A-mount).
If there's a reason Eye AF isn't working on an A9, A7III, or A7RIII I'm not sure.
Side note: I really think A-mount adapted lenses are a steal compared to Canon; the a mount lenses will also focus faster. The Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 is under $500. The 150-600mm is under $700.

I am using the A7riii, with the la3 and the second generation 70-400 g ii focusing is fast, images are excellent and the Eye focus works. As with all of the A7 series I am not sure if this is the best setup for BIF, the improved buffer on the 7riii is a help. The lock-on feature available with the native FE lenses could be useful.

Awesome, thank you for the feedback. I bought a 28-75 SAM and a Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 HSM cheap, currently using with LA-EA4 but planning to upgrade to A7iii with LA-EA3 in the near future.

Seems that on the A7(R)ii the Canon adapters are better supported, glad to hear A-mount lives on for the iii generation.

Now if only Sony updated the LA-EA4 firmware to ignore the translucent mirror and use on sensor focusing :)

I used Sony SAM 28-75/2.8 with laea3 + A7Rii and when I tried to use the button for eye-Af I got a super-great message in a black box saying "not supported by lens" ... But it was still possible to use face detection.

Could be interesting to know how this works on the new 3rd generation.

Other observation from A7Rii still:

Not possible to use the focus mode with groups, but if i remember well flexible spot was possible.

Another thing you should be interested in, is to know if you need or not tracking ability above 3 fps... ? Here too the experiences of each other are a bit confusing. Some claim that they are able to track focus @10fps, others say that @10fps tracking focus ain't working .... very confusing.

Last and not the least with A-mount you are using only PDAF, no contrast (but logic due to the design of A-mount lenses)

If you go the adapting route, be prepared to make trade-offs.

What is the A-mount body you're coming from BTW ?

EDIT: Just checked your signature, no A-mount body. I don't see the reason why you would adapt a-mount lenses... But give it a try and enjoy the experimentations ;)

With the A7riii + 'A' mount Sony 70-400 gii + lae3 adaptor, eye focus works, as far as the shutter is concerned, I have just used a native FE 55mm lens, and shot continuously at Low - Hi+, I then repeated using the 70-400 and there was no difference. I would add that I am slightly disappointed that the camera locks up for a few moments after continuous shooting if you want to use the menu - it will continue to take photos

Because the 70-400 can be purchased for under $900.... compared to about $2500 for the FE 100-400.

I hear your point but what is the interest if you're stuck @3fps with tracking focus on the A 70-400 compared to @10fps with continuous tracking on the native lens ?

But as I said, experimentations can be made.

If you could confirm us that you have tracking focus at anything above 3fps would be helpful please ?

Simple:

focus, fire @10fps (for example) then change target (closer or further) without releasing shutter and see if the 2nd target is still in focus or not ... And you'll know. My guess (because we have talked about it multiple times already => fail = no tracking )

3fps is plenty for many uses... depends how using it.

Ah ok in that case no problem, if for you is ok. Then no problem.

Just let us know if it works or not, because it would help others of the forum and would be much appreciated.

I've been happy with adapting the 1st gen 70-200 G and 70-300 G to the A7iii with the LEA3. I've used the 70-200G mostly and initial acquisition seems a bit slower than my A700 (it's very close) but tracking seem excellent. Eye-AF works well also.

EDIT: I should say that I haven't used them in an action situation. I've used them for mostly portraits and more static subjects.

Sony SAL 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G II features upgraded AF & reduced flare -vs- version I

Sony SAL 24-70mm f/2.8 ZA SSM II strictly reduces flare -vs- version I. AF is the same.

This is true both when using A-mount bodies and with LA-EA3.

It is strange you are linking to a dealer's website. If you look up the 24-70 SSM II on Sony.com you find in the description "Lens processing has also been revised for faster subject tracking..."

https://www.sony.com/electronics/camera-lenses/sal2470z2

This text is listed for every SSM II lens.

Judging by the list of A-mount lenses compatible with 10 FPS tracking on the A9, some lenses that weren't updated to SSM II already had this processing capability, but none of the original SSM lenses that were updated to SSM II are in the list.

Or more likely — they only bothered to list “current” lenses.
