SC P800 firmware update and nozzle check

After reading a post a while back about the new firmware for the P800 printing a nozzle check that uses more ink I decided to give it a go. At this point it does not seem likely that I will switch to third party inks so the updated firmware is, hopefully, not an issue.

Here is a scan of the nozzle check before the update (lower set) and after the update (top set). This clearly puts down more ink and the yellow is now easily visible. It seems to me this feature makes this a worthwhile firmware update if one is not using, or planning on using, third party inks.

upper row = nozzle check after P800 firmware update - --- lower row before update

I always appreciate the friendly help and advice here - hope this is helpful to someone.

How did it come.

Did you get an Epson software is available notice through an Epson program.

Glad it worked for you. I never accept an Epson firmware updates, including the ones offered upon installation of drivers, for 2 reasons: (1) I use 3rd party cartridges and inks; we're talking about consumer grade printers; and (2) I can never find what the Firmware Update is supposed to do.

In the printer driver under utilities tab there is a check for update option in the lower right corner. I had unchecked automatic updates when I got the printer in order to avoid updates in case an option became available for third party ink. At this point I will probably not be going third party because of the need to "install" a replacement motherboard.

I hear you on not knowing what the updates are supposed to do, and even if they do tell us, who knows what else is sliding in? I am most challenged with Microsoft in this regard. Think I heard this right, that the City of Atlanta ransomware attack was due to Microsoft software that had not been updated.

To clarify your statement of replacing the motherboard to use 3rd party inks. There is no motherboard replacement, it is an additional decoder board added. Seems to be working fine for most P800 owners using refillable cartridges.

Thanks for the clarification Bob. Are you aware of any reports about firmware updates having any affect on the decoder board or cartridges? It would seem that even with the decoder board a firmware update should have no affect. My logic being - if I buy a new P800 today it may have the new firmware. Assuming the decoder boards are sold to people with any version of the firmware it should work?

I have been enjoying the convenience of not having to deal with refilling carts (previously used Cone Ink in R3000, however, need to balance that with the use of less expensive ink encouraging more printing and exploration (learning). I probably need to revisit this.

After visiting Inkjetmall see they have the disclaimer to avoid updating firmware in any North American P800. Still, would be interesting to know if my firmware update precludes the use of the decoder board.

Jtoolman recently stated here that the latest USA P800 firmware update did not affect his decoder board.

Per my above post you shouldn't have any problems.

If I had a P800 and it was working fine with a decoder board, I would never upgrade the FW for the life of the printer to play it safe.

Bob, thanks for the information, very much appreciate it. Will go check the firmware to see if auto update was enabled in the last install. At this point would most likely wait until fall before making the switch, but could be looking into it now.

Thanks again,

Jay

You can check your current FW version to see if it is older/current/newer than the one listed that still works with the decoder board.

Hello ,

I am looking to buy a new printer for printing art copies on canvas.

Which printer would you suggest ?

A roll unit is a must and pigment inks are too.

Budget is up to 1500$

Was considering the Epson SC- P800 .

What do you owners think ?

Thank you all 😊
