If you are using or thinking about using mirrorless, what is your main motivation?

I am aware that you are attracted to many advantages of mirrorless, but what motivated you the most?

I'm a landscape guy and mid-range Fuji and M4/3 lenses out resolve mid-range DSLR lenses. If I had a "L" lens size budget I would have stayed with Canon DSLR. But I don't.

Came to 4/3 then M4/3 mainly because of the self-cleaning sensor which works.

Stayed because it is small and light and delivers the results I want. The excellent IBIS means that I have abandoned taking tripods with me any more on holidays.

So for me a few different reasons but I ticked the small and light reason as I am sticking with the smaller M4/3 bodies and mostly smaller lenses available.

Never rolled on from Nikon SLR film gear as I was dismayed by the bulk and awkwardness for me of the those early DSLRs, the 4/3 Olympus E-300 DSLR solved that bulk reason, and then the Olympus M4/3 Pen bodies made things smaller again. Happy to carry all day a small shoulder bag that weighs no more than 3kg and have usually 4 or 5 lenses from 15mm to 600mm equivalent in it.

The shorter registration distance means that simple adapters fit to allow me to use all my old Nikon lenses in a manual fashion if needed, but really haven't bothered that much, easier to stick with dedicated Olympus and Panasonic M4/3 lenses.

Regards...... Guy

Which lenses you are using for landscape?

Thanks

The 5 stops of 5 axis stabilization is the only thing that puts theA7r3 ahead of the D850.

I shake, rattle & roll making it hard for me to use primes.

At the moment I'm using the humble Sigma 19mm with my old Olympus E-M5. There are plenty of others to choose from in the mirrorless realm.

3kg is minuscule compared to DSLR equivalent, but still feels like a lot to carry all day.

I feel like bridge cameras such as RX 10 IV should get better.

So far the 3kg bag has not annoyed all day, but usually the bag is a bit lighter at 2.5kg. Of course for lighter still I just take the Pen body and 12-40/2.8 plus either a 7.5mm fisheye or maybe 9-18mm or maybe 45-150mm as a second lens, that small two-lens set fits in a small snoot bag, Never weighed it as it never bothers me at all for any sense of weight.

If wanting really really light then I just take a Casio pocket camera in a small belt pouch, latest acquisition having 1/1.7" sensor and 19-95mm equivalent lens = quite useful.

They will, but rather a smaller system camera with a range of choices of lenses for me.

My wife and my daughter.

With dSLR (E-5 & E-620 by that time), only I can enjoy the arts of photography. They, both, shunned hated it.

When E-P1 (& E-PM1) arrive, they can play with it at ease. In the morning, they can carry their camera with me to shoot the sunrise ..

The IQ of the mrl is nothing inferior to the dSLR.

I use M4/3s for size and weight.

I use mirrorless for other reasons. EVF is a big one. However, a few features also do a good job keeping me here. eg: 60FPS burst, live composite, other high speed sensor readout tricks. Video through the viewfinder is a big one.

Size, weight, and IBIS are the main reasons I have an interest in [FF] mirrorless.

I'm a astro nightscape shooter.

The large collection of sharp fast primes is what attracted me to Fuji.

The fact it's mirrorless doesn't bother me whatsoever as I was using my Canon DSLR in live view mode when composing and shooting in the dark anyhow. So I was already using my DSLR as a mirrorless. It was a natural and easy progression to the Fuji.

It's difficult to pinpoint just one motivation, but I was attracted especially to the EVF and electronic shutter of both M43 and Sony FF cameras.

Further details:

I use M43 mostly for wildlife and make frequent use of the tilt EVF on the GX8 when kneeling or sitting.

This combo is a pleasure to use when bird watching at a local lake. The electronic shutter is nice when close.

I use FF for most everything else, and just today, went to lunch with a group at an historic restaurant which was originally used as a citrus packinghouse during the early part of the 20th century.

I carried the camera + lens in a small shoulder bag. This is my favorite carry around system.

With the camera on a wrist strap, I was able to walk around inconspicuously, photographing mostly from waist and chest level using the flip up LCD of the camera. The electronic shutter eliminates noise which would attract attention.

I got my Fujis primarily because of the involving shooting experience they offer. I considered the EVF a negative rather than a positive, something I had to put up with to get the analog style controls and lenses with aperture rings that I like so much. I will say I have gotten to rather enjoy it, although not enough to use it full time.

Still not that interested in mirrorless as such, and would gladly own a DSLR that offered a Fuji style user experience.

I am not thinking about FF mirrorless yet. But for size and weight I am thinking of getting mirrorless as my second system. Maybe when I grow older I will switch to mirrorless completely.

For me it was video, and the release of the Panasonic GH2 a few years ago.

Do you shoot RAW? If you do which RAW editor you use? Is there any issues with Photoshop or Lightroom?

Me too. Controls, size, weight and cost all took me from Nikon full frame to Fuji. How Fuji arrived at this isn't of that much interest to me. They took the mirror out amongst other things. Makes no difference to me how a decent viewfinder works, mirrorless or reflex. The only thing I cannot use is a rear screen in bright light.

Short flange focal distance. Can adapt any lens.
