It was my second camera (the first one being a Sony) and I thought the versatility and the size of the camera was brilliant.

I also liked the sturdy structure of the camera which makes it reliable.

The handling is very easy and there are lots of different set up and modes you can chose from.

Highly recommend it for beginners and photographers wanting a convenient camera.

Mostly, I agree. There are a few things that annoyed me; but in general an excellent camera.

My biggest gripe with the SX220/230HS was the lack of automatic correction of chromatic aberration. Canon didn't get around to that until the SX240/260HS. On the other hand, the SX220/230 had a better and significantly faster lens. Probably because it didn't try to be super wide and super long. 392 mm, equivalent, is long enough for most activities.

Annoyances: the flash popping up whether I needed it or not, and the 16:9 aspect ratio LED screen which is a very poor match to the 4:3 aspect ratio of the sensor. Also, I disliked the bump on top of the SX230HS for the GPS. I tried but was unable to find an SX220HS in excellent condition.

To get around the flash popping up at turn on, I trained myself to hold the flash down with my left hand at turn on. It doesn't hurt the camera and I could always lift it manually if I needed it.

I have a sincere question, which I admit has the potential to seem like I'm trying to start a conflict, but I'm not.....

What is the point of posting reviews of such an older camera? It seems like every once in awhile here on DP Review, a brand-new member will post such a review, and I honestly and genuinely don't understand the purpose of such posts.

Is there a tradition or convention of procedure here that I'm missing?

Again, not trolling here, and I hope someone can enlighten me...!!

Seems like they could be useful for people looking to buy an older, probably used camera ...

It is good to have a reminder of the days of high performance little cameras before the days of crazy pixel stuffing. Possibly Canon may be shamed in to re-introducing a 12mp Ixus again which would do us all a favour.

Even Sony have backed off from 20mp to 18mp in 1/2.3" but it still generates tons of noise but Canon is relying on Sony left overs to stay in the compact market so probably no real chance of improvement.

If Canon is unable in the near future to source its own sensors all the posts could be mainly legacy here a la Olympus and Fuji so you may need to get used to it. The latest compact is a lash up around a DSLR sensor so the next few months are pretty important.
