I've had my D850 about 5 weeks now, shooting almost exclusively to a Sony 128GB G-series XQD card. This is the only image I've had (on this camera) that looks like this. What say you? Card problem?

Shots immediately before and after are fine. Nothing special going on at the time.

My guess is the superhero in the blue shirt was displeased that the superhero with the red mask had aid from his mother to strike him full chest. This caused him to emit powerful brainwaves that show up in the photo.

The card has a problem now, exchange it. Just don't show this image to Sony or they will claim 'impact damage' ;-)

Card / card reader problem. Had it before myself.

Once in awhile I’ve seen this. I would delete the image and reimport. Usually it came in fine the second time. If it looks this way on the camera then that’s a different matter.

I've had this happen multiple times with my D600 and a few times with my D500. It almost always happens with the first frame of a shoot/sequence and seems to happen right after powering on the camera. Certainly not scientific and because I shoot a backup jpeg to the secondary slot which comes out fine, I haven't spent any time analyzing it. I have not noticed a difference when transferring to multiple drives. That is, if it happens when I transfer to drive 1, it usually happens to my backup transfer. And, I transfer to a third drive, on a different computer, at a different location and to the best of my recollection, the problem occurs across all transfers.

I find it very frustrating and would like to know if others have experienced the same thing.

This sounds like a computer problem where the first image that is read from the card corrupts for some reason. The copy that is made in the computer memory seems to get corrupted and then copied to all the drives. The odds that it's both your cameras is very small.

I've had similar looking pictures with my D800.

Turned out to be the USB3 connection to my PC. Sometimes a got a corrupt image when transferring it to the PC. But when doing a reimport (via Nikon Transfer) it was fine.

When doing a binary file compare, in the affected file 1 bit was flipped.

In the end solved it by connecting the USB cable to a port in the back of my pc, rather than in the front.

If reimport shows the exact same problem, then you have a problem with the card.

Regards,

Frank

I had similar images with my D2X when it was brand new, in a city long long ago and far far away. I sent it in and Nikon gave the above diagnosis.

If it happens again I would send it in with examples.

I'll give a camera one chance to screw up but that's it.

Changing card reader solved this problem for me on my D800.

I was using a generic CF card reader - and I had nothing but problem with the new fast CF card - switching over to a Lexar card reader solved it for me.. So make sure you have a good quality and up to date card reader.
