Looking to build up a good starter lens collection for the Panasonic G9. I basically plan to start with a telephoto lens, an all-rounder lens and a fast lens for good low light (wide lens would be a plus there). Generally speaking i would like weather sealed and not noisy (good for video which is important since i will video a lot). Panasonic/Leica lenses are good for their stabilsation (big reason i went with the G9 is for excellent stabilsation).

For the telephoto lens i'll go with the Panasonic 100-400mm, it's the best one to go with really.

Looking for suggestions for an all rounder lens (small telephoto). I could get the Leica 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 which ticks many of the boxes but i heard it's quite noticable in video from 2.8 to 4.0. The Panasonic 12-35mm seems quite overpriced for what it is. Anything else i should be looking at?

A fast and possibly wide lens is the hardest one to pick since there are many options. Although not so wide, i have considered the 42.5mm Leica Nocticron lens which has fantastic 1.2, but i hear it's not weather sealed which seems a shame. The panasonic 25mm 1.7 i read can be very noisy which isn't good for video. The 12mm 1.4 lens seems good but i think doesn't have stabilsation?

So really only lens i am sure of is the 100-400mm telephoto. Advice on the other 2 would be welcomed.

Look for the PanaLeica 15/1.7

Olympus 12-40/2.8 is a great lens even for Panasonic body. I also like both 15mm/1.7 and 20mm/1.7 lenses.

You got the right idea more or less.

For an allrounder that's weathersealed, there's 3 options basically. PL 12-35, PL 12-60 and Oly 12-100. You decide how much you value max aperture or reach and pick one of the 3. Keep in mind the 12-100 is much bigger and heavier than the other 2 though.

For a fast, wide prime I don't see why you'd need optical stabilization given the fantastic IBIS in the G9. PL 12/1.4, PL 15/1.7 or Oly 17/1.2 are your best options, depending on how wide or fast you wanna go. Size also a consideration with the PL 15/1.7 being significantly smaller and lighter than the other 2 options.

Your budget is larger than mine, so my choice might not be yours. But I have the 14-140 II on my G7 just about whenever I'm outdoors (except at an air show where I use the 100-300 II) . In daylight it's really better than I think we have any right to expect for a 10x zoom.

the 12-60 if you can shoot in manual mode for video you might be able to keep the aperture at f4 or higher. the 12 -35 would also be good for video and ws.

many oly pro primes are weathersealed, check on the specifics for panasonic though, as I do not know. the 25 1.7 is not noisy and great for video.

panasonic 14-140 if you want a longer walkaround. check on weathersealing.

Not sure why you'd say that.
In any case, I'd go for the 12-35/2.8 or 12-60/2.8-4 since their zoom rings rotate in the same direction as the 100-400 (Olympus lenses go in the opposite direction).

For a small, fast prime, I'd then choose the PL15/1.7.

If you check my gear list we are thinking in the same direction - nearly. I have the 12-60mm Leica lens (excellent) also the 100-400 Leica, again excellent but jumped ship for macro and have the Olympus MFT 60mm f2.8 macro which makes my 3 lens. They cover all I need and do it well. The only let-down is the chap looking through the 'excellent' viewfinder. Yes, I am happy with my lot and just added a small Godox TT350 TTL flash. I don't do a lot of flash but this little chap will do for me when needed.

Everything, including batteries and cards etc fits comfortably in my Lowepro backpack.

I use the 100-400, 8-18 and 12-60 most often with this camera body. With the exception of 61-99, everything is covered. :)

I also have the 35-100, so even that is covered.

I love my 25mm f/1.4. It’s my go to lens for indoor shooting. I also like my 45mm f/2.8 macro lens. I’ll use this when I am outside and want some reach.

Zoom with your feet.

i just picked up the 8-18 f/2.8. Fantastic for super wide shots. Can’t wait to take it to Paris in April.

I’d pick up at least one prime. The 25mm one. It is very close to being a normal lens.

I rented a number of lenses for 3-4 days to try them out.

good luck.

I have a Oly 12-40mm f2.8 on my G9 a lot. I love the lens. Having no dual IS doesnt bother me...I find the IBIS more than enough.

The Panny 12mm f1.4, having no IS wouldn't be a worry either. Its wide, so the IBIS alone should be enough.

Even though you mention the PL 100-400mm , generally people would gravitate to the 35-100mm f2.8 first as it tends to be more useful. It does depend on what you like shooting though.

Three lenses I own that I find to be very awesome.

Panasonic 7-14 - for some reason UWZs don't get a lot of love on this forum, I tend to be a wide angle shooter and really enjoy this lens.

Panasonic 12-35 Really one of the better photo equipment purchases I've ever made. Constant aperture f/2.8 & importantly, sharp wide open. Great rendering IMO. Can't say enough good things about it.

Panasonic Leica 15 Small, super sharp. f/1.4 for low light or shallow depth of field.

Personally, I didn't like the 12-32 kit lens that came with my gx85. I fully accept that sample variation exists in lenses, and I probably got a less than average one, as it does seem well regarded for a kit lens. I do wish the Panasonic would come out with a high quality compact zoom around the same size as the 12-32 I'd be all over that in a second.

If i could only have one of the three that I listed, I'd keep the 12-35 without hesitation.

8-18mm 2.8-4.0 PannyLeica - landscape, hiking, interiors, children and pet close-ups

25mm PannyLeica - low light, portrait (although sometimes I find myself too close to the subject indoors and there is no room to go further away - had 20mm 1.7 Panny but it had slow zoom - so perhaps best PannyLeica 20mm 1.7?)

35-100mm 2.8 II Panny - sports, nature close-ups, subject isolation, video

But everyone has different needs :)

I've been shooting Panasonic Mirrorless since the G-1. I have a large nober or lenses that I have collected. My current 3 favorites ( I am not a "Prime-boy") are:

1, Pan/Leica 12-60 ( I sold the Olympus 12-40 f2.8 and kept the old 12-35 Panasonic f2.8 v1 which was not worth selling, but a great lens. The Olympus was heavy, I hated the optic and feel - performed well- bit not better than the 12-60 IMHO)

2. Pan/Leica 8-18 (just awesome, uses filters, sharp, fast-love it, sold the Panasonic 7-14, but kept a really compact Olympus 9-18 that I got on e-bay - good copy works well)

3. Pan/Leica 100-400...forget everything else. (I find the zoom invaluable compared to the long primes) Easily my favorite lens!

If I had to buy primes: Olympus 60 Macro probably the best MFT macro; Pan/Leica 15 mm, Panasonic 50 f1.8 for low light , if I am not using the Sony a7iii which is mostly what I use for low light with th Zeiss 55 f1.8- but that's another story).

I'm sure thee are other great lenses, but this is what I use most.

A fast and possibly wide lens is the hardest one to pick since there are many options. Although not so wide, i have considered the 42.5mm Leica Nocticron lens which has fantastic 1.2, but i hear it's not weather sealed which seems a shame. I don't understand, does focal length not matter? I would've thought it would be the most important thing to consider.
So really only lens i am sure of is the 100-400mm telephoto. Advice on the other 2 would be welcomed.
