I've already excluded the Fujis - didn't see the Olympuses come up anywhere - 5700 vs. 7Hi is the question for me now ???

Michael,

Adam apparently owns neither yet and is here asking the age old question, "Which one should I buy?" No more, no less. Maybe you should look up the definition of the term "troll" so you understand its meaning and proper usage before you use it so freely and incorrectly.

And you've called me rude? You can't throw stones if you live in a glass house...

the 5700 will reward you greatly if you take the time to learn it, and you will have to take the time.

Everything you ever wanted to know about the 5700 but were afraid to ask is contained in this forum so if you get the 5700 make sure to bookmark "Nikon Talk". Look around and you'll see what I mean. Sometimes you have to wade in past all the BS but it's always worth it!

If I can supply any more details that you might be interested in, just ask.

Happy Shooting with whatever you decide!

Adam,

I have the 5700, I read the reviews and downloaded images before I purchased. There were a few things that led me to the 5700. The noise levels of the 5700 at ISO 100 are lower that the 717 and the 7Hi. The 5700 color reproduction is also better IMHO and the camera is more compact. The 7Hi does have some advantages as you know...tough decision...good luck.

I too was considering the minolta. I handled and shot photos with both, bringing the cf card home to print for myself. I like the 28mm zoom and manual zoom and focus on the minolta, but the nikon still was the camera for me. I did a lot of research on both, and my buddy bought the minolta based on that, I went nikon. I have handled his camera and shot some more photos with it, but still think the nikon does a better job. It all depends on what you plan to do with it.

The forum here can help you with any hurdles. Both cameras will require the will to learn, and patience.

Good Luck

I used to have a minolta DiMAGE 5, now I own an 5700. Both good camera's but I did my switch not without a reason from Nikon to Minolta.
I had a look at the following camera's : D7Hi, 5700 and sony 717

The 7HI is like the 5 derived from the 7, so I think I can argue a bit on why a 5700 instead of 7HI.
The points where the 5700 is far more better than the Minolta is :
  • The finishing, I saw several Minolta's (including 7HI) and all give you the idea that the job could be done a little bit better. The 5700 is perfect finished.
  • The noise level, Minolta has in my opinion a too high level of noise, this is not solved by the latest type, the 7HI. especially during night shots this can be a real pain in the .. neck..
  • Autofocus. Both camera's do have problems in poor light conditions, the Nikon is more fool proof, the Minolta D5 did a very bad job in focussing at all, the 7i does better, but still read in reviews even the 7HI af is not perfect. I am very happy with the af of the 5700, the only thing I do not like about the 5700 is how to use the manual focus.. there is no focus ring and the manual focus does not tell you the distance to the object.
Hope this brings a littlebit light into it;)
Regards,
Hans

Adam,

What are your personal points of conetntion between the cameras that are preventing you from making a decision? You've obviously looked at the other cameras to narrow the field down to these two; I'd like to understand where your thinking is now so that I can give a better answer.

They're both quite good cameras, and I'm certainly quite happy with my 5700.

Well if you look at the 2 people you mention both ask questions that have been beaten to death. If Adam is serous he will ask again. The other guy hasn’t been back. I still say that this guy needs to ask more direct questions and to do some homework. The same things you all try to hang me for. When in fact I did more research than you'll ever know. Mostly because of rudeness from people like you and total misinformation received here.

As for this question Adam, you would be better off reading the reviews than the hype about what a great camera the 5700 is. Mine is still in the repair shop as well as several other people's I know. Mine would have been there much sooner but these people had me convinced that I might not in fact, after 25 plus years behind a camera, understand something about digital cameras that I thought I did. I went back to the manual and trird again and again. Well they are all wrong. This camera in my case makes an image that looks like motion blur even when mounted on a trypod and shooting at all shutter speeds and conditions. Nikon admitted to me that mine has a common problem and it will be fixed, at least I hope it is.

Adam, If I were you, I’d be looking into the customer satisfaction factor here. Look at the owner reviews, Look here and read, not one or two but 20 or 30… these are the 5700 reviews from dp review
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/read_opinions.asp?prodkey=nikon_cp5700

These are from the Minolta, read these VERY carefully, your wallet and your sanity may depend on it.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/read_opinions.asp?prodkey=minolta_dimage7hi

Also may I advise you to look at my favorite, the Fuji S602PRO. Do not discount the quality of a 3mp camera and the internal resolution method that Fuji uses works about ½ way giving you almost a 4.3 to 4.5mp image. If you have been told anything negative about this camera it is wrong, see what owners say.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/read_opinions.asp?prodkey=fuji_finepixs602z

The Fuji S602 PRO is my favorite so far. I’m still waiting for my 5700 to come back from repair so I can see if it’s worth keeping. I own all of these except for the Minolta. I would LOVE to try one and see first hand how well they work.

Sorry Adam for the Troll remark, I looked at your profile and saw that you only had 4 or 5 posts and are very new. We get lost of Nikon bashers coming here looking for trouble. I think DR is one of them, he’s always lurking, looking for trouble. LOL…

See the list of cameras I own below, I ma familiar with them all and have the owners manual handy. If I can answer any questions about any of these, try me. My email is in my profile. Unlike some of these play babies, I don’t hide. My info is available to those like you who may really want my help. Guys like DR and kiss my A$$.
I hope this helps!

Well if you look at the 2 people you mention both ask questions
that have been beaten to death.
First, I was talking to YOU not Adam. So what "2 people" are you talking about? Secondly, most seem to ask about the 717 not the 7Hi so am I right in assuming you meant the "which should I buy?" question?
If Adam is serous he will ask again.
Why would you assume he wasn't "serous"? He has very little history here so why wouldn't you think he was legitimately interested?
The other guy hasn’t been back.
Any surprise with responses like yours?
I still say that this guy needs to ask more direct questions and to do
some homework.
And that should have been your answer...
The same things you all try to hang me for.
If you feel that way, attack me, not the new guy.
When in fact I did more research than you'll ever know. Mostly because
of rudeness from people like you and total misinformation received here.
Show me ANY instance where I spread misinformation! As far as rudeness? I'm only rude to those that I think deserve a dose of it, like you at this time, for example...

By the way, have you ever noticed that "rudeness" seems to depend on which end of that stick you're on, the giving or receiving?
As for this question Adam, you would be better off reading the
reviews than the hype about what a great camera the 5700 is.
True, what's your point?
Mine is still in the repair shop as well as several other people's I
know. Mine would have been there much sooner but these people had
me convinced that I might not in fact, after 25 plus years behind a
camera, understand something about digital cameras that I thought I
did. I went back to the manual and trird again and again. Well they
are all wrong. This camera in my case makes an image that looks
like motion blur even when mounted on a trypod and shooting at all
shutter speeds and conditions. Nikon admitted to me that mine has a
common problem and it will be fixed, at least I hope it is.
So after "25 years" in photography, reading the manual several times, and working your little fingers to the bone, you were convinced that there was nothing wrong with your camera? Even though were you getting "an image that looks like motion blur even when mounted on a trypod and shooting at all shutter speeds and conditions"? Because you were told that on this forum? Please! Where was your "25 years" experience at? It was telling you that there was a problem and you didn't listen? Why not? You need more confidence in your knowledge and abilities.

And then you say everyone on this forum was wrong! You'll be lucky if mine is the only "rude" response you get now...
Adam, If I were you,...
[snip]

Now your helpful!...
Sorry Adam for the Troll remark, I looked at your profile and saw
that you only had 4 or 5 posts and are very new.
So if I was right in my comment to you, why do you want to "rumble"?
We get lost of Nikon bashers coming here looking for trouble. I think DR
is one of them, he’s always lurking, looking for trouble. LOL…
I'm one of the "lost Nikon bashers"? What would lead you to that conclusion? Remember that stupid "research" that was done on this forum? Somehow I was the only person that made both the list of "Nikon Defenders" and one of "The Most Helpful" list. Where does bashing fit into this? If my goal was to look for trouble (read that, misinformation or ridiculous statements) it would only take moments, not days. My recent hiatus has been because I've been very busy at work and that I'm tired of answering the same questions repeatedly. So I've said nothing, that is until I see you calling new people "trolls" in such a way that it's obvious that you have no idea what the term means. Oh, but I'm the rude one...
See the list of cameras I own...
[snip]
Unlike some of these play babies, I don’t hide.
"Play baby"? And who's hiding? The last thing I could be accused of is hiding. There are probably lots of folks that wish I would but it's just not me. Feeling a little froggy, eh? Try to get me to hide... I'll respond to any and all comments you'd like to make.

[snip]
Guys like DR and kiss my A$$.
And who? I just love an intelligent response like that. It doesn't tax my brain to come with a solution, or anything else for that matter...

In closing this little response, I'd like to suggest a couple of things to you Michael:

1. Use the preview button before you post.

2. Get a spell check program.

3. Sell your 5700. You haven't liked it from day one so why not just cut your losses and get rid of it? Even if it comes back in pristine shape from Nikon I don't think it would be enough to turn around your opinion of it. I think you've found a great camera for yourself in the 602 so go with it.

4. If your going to insult someone, know what you're saying or it has a boomerang effect.
I hope this helps!
Happy Interpolating!

Firstly - and in response to a numberof replies to my original post ...

I AM serious and I am NOT a Nikon basher - my first digicam is a 775 whish whilst a "snap" camera, combined with Photshop Elements is absolutely superb

My current interest is generated out of my photographic experiences with the 775 and now that the kids are grown up and gone (well almost !!!), the travelling that my wife and I plan and the places that takes us to, that we couldn't afford before

I think I would have bought the 5700 already had it not been for doubts through reading many, many reviews/comments/etc on this level of digicam - the 5700 is still there, firmly, but I've had to look at the 7Hi

I did look at the S602Z, but I cannot get clarity to my satisfaction on the issue of interpolation - and the 717 is just too ill shaped for me and seems to loose out to the 5700 and 7Hi in all independent (unbiased) reviews/comments/etc

I do want to "just take snaps", albeit good ones, but I also want to be able to capture the places/things we see in a more fullsome manner - in short, I want to be able to produce results from a position of relative ignorance, to a standard approaching semi-professional (all tall order I know)

I can't get my hands on both cameras to try, so the advice I'm getting from this forum - and the equivalent Minolta forum (no apologies made) - together with the extensive research I've already undertaken is the only way in which I'll make what is a not inexpensive purchase, but hopefully one that I won't regret and will give me what I want

If I'm truthful, the points of contention (in either direction) are (and forgive any inaccuracies in terminology, which there will be !!!):
  • 35/280 vs. 28/200 mm
  • (I'm told) "standard" filter size fittings on the Minolta
  • auto vs. manual zoom
  • comments on Monolta quality (of build) ... probably one for the Minolta forum ???
  • rechargeable vs. AA batteries
and there's probably a few other minors that I have but don't hit the grey matter right now

Everything - including the banter - is helping ... not there quite yet so keep coming ...... PLEASE

Thanks

Adam

PMA is a big photo manufacturer's trade show which is when and where they announce the new product lines(the lastest greatest cameras).

I am a Fuji602 owner. Had money not been a problem I would have purchased the 5700. After shooting with the 602z(at $650), I don't know if the 5700 is $500 better. However, this IS my first digicam and will probably move to Nikon for my serious upgrade as I did with my SLR's. I don't know where you live but can't you buy one with the option of returning it within 30 days?
