Fujifilm app: photos darker when transferred?

Hi all!

When I take a photo and look at it on the rear screen of my Fuji (X-T10, for what matters) usually I see it correctly exposed. Maybe a bit on the dark side, but they are ok, and I like bolder shadows.

When I open them in my software editor (Darktable) they are completely fine.

But when I transfer them to the phone with the Fuji app, and I upload them to Whatsapp/Telegram or whatever, I find them too dark. Sometimes I push them (with any phone editor) to +1EV (!!!) to get a pleasant view on phones.

It's not a big issue, but I was wondering if I am the only one that noticed this issue, and if there is anything I can do.

Thank you!

This is likely an issue with phones. If you send the untouched file to your phone (where it looks too dark) then to something like Instagram (where again it will look too dark on your phone) but then view Instagram on a computer, it will look correct again.

The screen of your camera will automatically brighten even if it's dark unless you go into the menus to change this. That is why even in very dim light you can still see the image in the evf/LCD.

If you are judging by screen view that might be your problem.

Yes, that could be part of the problem, but for sure it is not the only issue.

I mean, if I take a picture with auto-exposure, and the exposure compensation dial is on 0, or +1/3, in normal conditions (no shooting against sun, no snow, etc...) this should give more or less a correctly exposed picture...

This is the bit I mean.

You really can't determine if your exposure is correct from the EVF or a mobile phone. You really need to view the images on a calibrated monitor. Then if you are saving your photos as AdobeRGB images depending on the web browser or app being used, the color can be way off. I am not sure what if any of the phones actually support images in any color space other then sRGB.

If you can, I would view your images on a calibrated color monitor and then if they appear correct to you, adjust the brightness on your phone to match the calibrated image. Color space calibration can get quite complicated.
