How many different / other / additional Camera Systems - Do you use?

Even Nikon, with it's large flange-focal distance (that can mount on Canon but not v.v.) won't mount on the Sigma because of the diameter.

I'll refine my previous statement.

My dream camera would be a Sigma (full frame, but I'll take APS-H) that uses the same sort of microlenses used in the Ricoh GXR to make it especially suited to shorter flange-focal distance (steeper angle of incidence), with solid autofocus aids (at least as good as on my Sony), in a Leica M-Mount.

I'm currently using (and loving) M-Mount (and F-Mount) glass on my Sony A7 - small lenses with great quality? I'll take it!

To have the Sony as my "high ISO night time camera" and a Foveon sensor at the heart of my "low ISO daytime camera" - with all the same lenses - would be a dream.

Sigma lenses are undoubtedly great, but to buy a whole new set of *proprietary* lenses for a sensor doesn't make sense to me. I buy for the oldest still viable lens mounts & not the newest.

So I stick to my Merrill "point and shoot" cameras and hope for a Sigma M-Mount....
Or you could open Pandora's box and get into M42 lenses.....

(they would work with the Sigma and the Sony)

Shawn

P.S. Totally agree about wishing the SDQH had a shorter flange focal length and then an adapter to let it use SA mount lenses. Since Sigma makes adapters to go from X to Sony how crazy would it have been to have a Sony mount on it?
LOL. I'm aware of M42 lenses and briefly considered it.

But it's still an expense that would be unique to the Sigma body.

Sure I could use M42 lenses on my Sony body, but I'm already turned off by the size of the Nikon adapter & how much it unbalances the camera. I'm not about to turn around and buy another set of long flange-focal lenses just as I'm transitioning away from my Nikon glass.

Hello:

Just curious - How many different camera systems, do you use, along with “including” Sigma products, both and/or either: Foveon Merrill based sensors or Quattro sensors cameras?
Nex 5N with 3 lenses and S5 Pro & D810 with 3 or 4 kilos of Nikon Glass . Nowadays I am trying to stop a X-T20 to enter in my Bag...
Thanks for commenting,

Have a nice day -
You too

Hey J, I find it interesting that you have the S5 Pro and a D810. Which do you think is more capable for ultimate dynamic range in a single shot? (meaning a single press of the shutter for a scene that is in motion, such as a plane taking off, an action shot of birds, or something like a backlit crown of people) I'm guessing the D810, because of its HDR mode, but that isn't technically for use in a single shot situation, right?

The reason I ask that question, is because I once saw a comparison of a D800 vs Fuji S5 Pro, which made the Fuji look more capable than that full-frame Nikon dynamic range "king" (at least that's what most people seem to think of the Nikon). I really like Fuji's old sensor technology and wish they had continued to develop it and introduce a full-frame DSLR. I wish they had used it in their GFX-50s.

Hello Scott

I think the Fuji has the edge in DR if the shot is exposed to the right, some PPL talks about 5 stops of recovery. The problem with the Fuji is/was not good support for back focusing in some areas like mine . (not AF micro adjust available in this Cam). Nikon also refused to touch it (D200 Body). The Fuji AF is slow and anything else compared to the D810 (maybe the Fuji wins in RAW files size :-)

i havent tried HDR mode yet.

Per some reason the SD14 can render good DR in clouds where the S5pro could do well. That would be an interesting test: The Fuji, The nikon and the Sigma catching the same bright cloudy sky.

I love my Sigma, but it does disappoint sometimes, and it was a bit of a journey getting to know it. For now it just lives in my studio & doesn't come outside.
Take it outside with a couple of spare batteries in your pocket, as soon as the light gets a bit brighter. You will get some great photos with a DP3M out of doors.

Understood. I've sold a number of my Nikon lenses too (got rid of my D700 a year or two ago). But I still hang onto a couple of lenses as they are just so sweet and work well on my Fuji. Shame I can't use them on the SDQH easily.

I'm kinda surprised at the range of gear that most nominally Fovenistas seem to own. Is this an amateur obsession? To have all bases covered from macro to astronomy? Or a youthful masculinity question? Or just pride of ownership?

Curious .....

Hello!

For me it is about having fun (and curiosity).

:-) - and using alternative gear to "cover" where the Sigma's (Foveon) sensors falls short..

Crazy for a lens manufacturer.

They would have to make a new range of lenses to fit it, and then users would attach all kinds of other lenses instead of buying nice new Art lenses.
This is a Sigma decision. Fuji had a similar question and answered it with the x-mount. Lots of other optics now fit their x-mount cameras (even c-mount video lenses!), and Fuji has a healthy lens line as well.

So I think Sigma should have gone with a short flange mount also. We could use existing lenses with an electronic SA-mount adapter (buy this from Sigma) or buy new Sigma lenses for the new Sigma short flange mount. Sigma lens sales would not have suffered, and they would have sold a few more cameras.

Maybe Sigma is not going this way because they are losing tons of money on the price of the cameras. $799 for a sd Quattro seems to me like a low price for what I have. They don't want to sell a lot of cameras.

Exactly my thoughts. If I could adapt more of my lenses, I would already have bought a Quattro-H. For just shooting some of my M42-lenses, it's a bit too expensive, and current budget won't allow a native lens.

Not saying the Quattro-H is too expensive btw.

Or flip that around... and using Sigma gear where it excels .. specifically easy IR/FR/UV photography, panoramic 21:9, and high detail shots.

I ran into a photographer (with a Canon SLR & fast 50) and he said he wanted to get into Medium format because it would slow him down - I told him to look at Sigmas instead. LOL.
I shoot film, in a meter less camera for the same reason. It forces me to slow down, evaluate the light (to estimate exposure) and as there is a cost involved in each shot (and a limited number of them) I tend to think more about the possibilities before taking the picture.

Plus, old film cameras are just so much fun to shoot. ;)

EOS 1Ds, Samsung NX20 and NX Mini along with dp3M and SD14. Only legacy glass for the Bayer cameras. 90% OM Zuiko.

That last sentence is oh, so true!

From a commercial point of view pretty crazy, a new mount and camera protocol to support and an open door to invite users to use lenses other than those manufactured by Sigma.

That said, I'd like to see it too and it is available in China through homebrew systems but they are all fully manual so you need either to accept a single aperture on a lens or get lenses with external aperture rings (that function).

I've played with the idea of having a dpMx converted to sony mount or waiting to see if a new generation of dp cameras emerges with peaking and having one of those converted.

One fellow over on Xitek converted an sdQ to sony mount and also engineered analogues to the mc11 for both canon and sigma mounts. That effort was entirely hand tooled and when he looked at scaling up he apparently abandoned the idea so I presume there is only one of these in existence.

Only to shoot my OM Zuikos. I have made an adapter OM-SA for short distances, and speculating on finding a possibility to make an OM-mount on the SD14. If I find a way to do it properly, I will not need the Bayers.

Indeed! :D (A beauty)
