Most often the reason for not being able to make a proper selection is that one has the wrong layer selected. You need to have the background layer aka the photo active when you make a selection.
I’m not saying that this was the problem for you, but the selections are actually a big strength of Affinity Photo and work very well for me and others.
Trashing the app after just a couple of hours of testing is a bit weird. Have you had a look at the essential training videos while evaluating? This app certainly has a steep learning curve, especially if one isn’t familiar with Photoshop and layers. But it’s worth the time!
I'm not saying you need layers to do this. I'm saying that selecting the wrong layer before attempting to make a selection in the picture is the most common problem for not being able to make a proper selection. For instance, If you have a denoise filter layer on top of your background image layer and try to attempt to make a selection while being on that layer, you probably won't get any results. You need to be on the background layer in order to make a selection. And this was your problem, right?u don't need layers to do this simple task, it can be used in an action as well for batch processing, sorry but that's all it takes to see if a programme is going to work for you or not, the controls arnt even their in the programme in the first place. Most often the reason for not being able to make a proper selection is that one has the wrong layer selected. Feel free to clarify your problem if I'm wrong.

Don, nobody forces you to use Affinity Photo. If you're more comfortable with Photoshop or any other software, then go for it! As for me, I don't have any difficulties making selections. In fact, I think Affinity's selection tools are really powerful (and I know that I'm not alone with that opinion).I have no idea what your talking about, their is 1 image that's it , the one that's on the screen, theirs no hidden images, the program cant even select a shade of colour and change it period.

Hey Graham, I read the thread you linked here (it's a good one) and I completely agree with that discussion. Affinity's RAW converter admittedly kinda sucks, especially for lifting shadows and pulling highlights. There are other threads talking about this problem, too.
Yes, a number of people on these forums have drawn my attention to this. I'd love to give Adobe the finger, but it's only a month or so since I downloaded the Affinity trial, so it's probably too early to do so again. I intend to keep an eye on Affinity developments and try it again in the fullness of time. Adobe have had decades to get Photoshop to where it is now, so they've had quite a head start.Hey Graham, I read the thread you linked here (it's a good one) and I completely agree with that discussion. Was Don talking about this problem at the beginning of this thread when he said that he "couldn't even select a shadow in a portrait on a white background and fade it"?
Either way, I thought I would share Affinity's latest announcement with you in which they claim that this issue was fixed by their 1.6.6 release. Personally, I think Affinity's algorithm is still worse compared to Lightroom's or Luminar's, but it has indeed gotten better with the newest version of Affinity. You probably already know about this, though.

Ligthing, some brush options that Photoshop lacks etc.as title - I think it reasonable that affinity will be playing catch up - but I wonder if users can highlight anything it does better or has taken a simpler approach to than PS?
