Selective Color

So I am sure it is evident I am new to the hobby of photography. I have seen a few comments and it seems like selective color is a "no no" and almost frowned upon. I assume if it is not overused or done right it could be a good thing maybe. Any reason why it is shunned so much amongst more seasoned photographers? Thanks for any input.

I think everyone got sick of a bouquet of flowers with a colored rose and it can look cheap and gimmicky.

I really have not seen any shots of photographers that I admire that use that technique.

It can be useful. It's fun to do outdoors.

In photography you should shoot for yourself and not for others so if it's something you want to try and enjoy, then that's what counts!

Thanks for the replies

Real photographers like to imitate film, referring to its look as "realistic". Anything else makes them want to throw up.

Non photographers consider extreme manipulating to be an artistic tool that they like if they like the colors, composition, etc.

Your customer is more likely to be a non photographer than a photographer, so listen to the real photographers when it comes to technique and listen to the non photographers when it comes to style.

I haven't seen a lot of selective color that works for me. That said, there is nothing inherently wrong with the technique. I've done a few myself that I like, and others also, but I'd say it's harder to perfect than one would guess. I think it's an area where someone can mark their territory and I'd love to see it done. The red flower against the B+W background, nah.

There are a lot of sheep out there. Newbies that hear that something is shunned upon, so they immediately think it's bad without thinking it through themselves.

Look at all the people on the internet that rag on Nickleback, but have never even listened to them. It's just the "Cool" thing to do.

Edited to add:

Those same people who think selective color is horrible often think black and white photos are awesome, yet black and white is completely unrealistic, and at least selective color has some realistic color in it.
