Back in early August I bought a D5600, and I usually use the preview screen when shooting. I've noticed that, when going to manual and making any changes, say to the aperture or exposure, the overall brightness of the preview never changes. Evidently the preview screen always auto-adjusts, So the only way to see what the finished shot will look like is, in fact, to take the finished shot and see what it looks like.

Is there any setting on this camera by which I can make the preview screen vary with the settings? I'm a beginner, so it would be very helpful if, when my settings would result in a shot that is way too dark, the preview would also be way too dark.

The only way to check if you have got the right exposure is to pull up the Exposure Bar on the screen, by pressing the info button. Exposure Bar is a linear scale with Zero 0 in the middle, a minus - sign on the left end and a plus + sign on the right end. A little short bar under the scale will stay under the 0 if your settings will provide the right exposure.

If you reduce the shutter speed or the aperture or ISO, more little short bars will be added to the left, towards the - sign, indicating that your shot will be under exposed, and vice versa, towards the + sign, indicating over exposure.

If you are shooting Manual on OVF, you can see the Exposure Bar on the OVF.

If you are saying that you for example, change the aperture and cant tell a difference in overall exposure on the pictures on the preview screen, then there seems to be something wrong with your cam. I can definitely see changes in exposure. As far as I know there is no auto-adjust for the Lcd, only a overall brightness setting.

:Edited:

Have you maybe turned on auto-iso, so that the cam adjusts the exposure to the same level, when changing for example the shutter speed?

Very interesting. Life view preview on both of my D5600 and Coolpix A do not show actual exposure on preview. If my manual settings are over or under, I cannot tell from the preview. I can only tell if my exposure will be good or not from the Exposure Bar, somebody may call that an Exposure Meter. The previews on live view are always good even when the shot ended up totally dark or completed whited out.

Which Nikon model do you have?

I just noticed on a recent thread on this forum, that the D7200 can't provide Live view Exposure simulation neither.

I got a D5600 - Okay, I might have mistaken the problem, because I thought he was talking about the picture preview that appears after taking the foto. But concerning live view: I believe it can show actual exposure when 'manual video settings' (I translated that, not sure how it is called in the english cam settings) are turned on - however shutter speed then cant be set longer than 1/60 and liveview must be turned off again to set aperture, so not really convinient.

So I had the same issue with shooting on my D5600...

Almost gave up but finally got a solution..

Go to settings then movie settings and put them on..

I guess by default they are usually off.

Then go to your live view mode and adjust your exposure settings and see..

I hope this helps

The D5600 will do exposure preview in live view when the manual movie settings are enabled, though the only limitation of it is that it limits your minimum shutter speed to 1/30s.

Other than that, the exposure preview is accurate and works well.
