Does stacking of Moon images work in RegiStax 6?

For me, it either crashes or totally messes up the image alignment. (This could easily be operator error.) All of the videos I found showing how it works are converting short movies to a single enhanced image.

I manually aligned 3 images (it was all that I could stand to do) in PSE, and I guess it works there, but is waaaaay too tedious. (Left is the average, right a single image)

Since these will all be separate exposures, I expect to average maybe 15-20 images.

Is there a better way?

I have used Registax to stack many Moon images. At first these were sequences of JPEG frames captured by a stills digital camera. Later I got better results using a dedicated lunar/planetary video camera producing .AVI format video streams.

Now I use AutoStakkert!-2 for stacking, as it is much faster and easier to use than Registax for that. But after stacking, the wavelet module in Registax-6 is still the best for wavelet sharpening.

Here's an example of an image produced by that method, showing the Triesnecker-, Hyginus- and Ariadaeus-Rilles (upper left) and Mare Tranquillitatis (Middle to lower right):

I manually align ever single set of pictures in PS. I find it much better than stucking softwares. Sure it it some work, but now it takes less than 30 sec to align each frame. Use difference blending mode and keyboard arrows to move the frames.

I used AutoStakkert!3 to do my stack posted recently here:

I only use RegiStax 6 for its wavelets these days. I use the same workflow as I use for planets, but with Surface selected in AS!3. Same for the Sun (Halpha) too.

Let me know if I can answer any questions or help you in this regard.

What are the advantages of Autostakkert!-3 over the 2nd version? I use AS!-2 on my Mac using a wineskin. So it would take a bit of work to upgrade to the next version. So I'm wondering if the upgrade would be worth the hassle. So far AS!-2 seems to work with no glitches.

Thanks for the info. I will try AutoStakkert.

Thanks to all three of you. I can only mark one answer as the right answer, but you were all very helpful.
