Hi folks!

Thanks in advance for you help.

Any tips to get the Epson 1640XL running on Yosemite and higher?

It seems as though the Epson sites, USA, Europe, Canada, they all provide a different set of files.

Just for example, the European site one has a fairly recent Scan Patch file but to install it , you already have to have an older version of Epson Scan installed which is a PowerPC only application. Feeling stuck.

I know Windows in and out but have very basic knowledge of the Mac. Any tips would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

Not even looking, see if Epson has drivers that are for 10.8 or later.

If they have drivers up to 10.5, then it's PowerPC, which means you're outta luck.

If it's up to 10.7, then it's up to 32-bit, also outta luck.

If they have drivers for 10.8 (or later), grab those, install em (even though it's not labeled for 10.10 or later) and enjoy, in most cases anyways. Sometimes there is unforeseen bugs, but with drivers, usually as long as the baseline support is there, plug and play, but hunting down the driver, that can be fun.

Scanner support on the Mac works, like I imagine scanner support in Windows works: You have (A) the scanner maker's software, (B) the operating system's scanner support, and (C) third-party scanner applications. Three routes to a scanner.

So far you have tried option (A), the Epson software. That is a dead end, as it is for so many old peripherals abandoned by their makers.

Your other two options are still open. I have an Epson 1660 scanner that's over 10 years old, and it still works in my Sierra (10.12) Mac, because I can run it using the two other options. I am confident you will be able to do it the same way.

Option (B): Every Mac comes with a utility program called Image Capture. This utility can preview and download images off of cameras, camera cards, and...scanners. When my Epson 1660 is plugged into the Mac, Image Capture will recognize it and display scanning controls. This is probably the option you will use, because you already have that program.

If for some reason Image Capture doesn't see the scanner, try installing the Image Capture driver found on the Epson web site: https://epson.com/Support/Scanners/.../s/SPT_B121011?review-filter=Mac+OS+X+10.10.x

Option (C): There are third-party scanning applications for Macs. One is VueScan, which I own, and it will scan through my Epson 1660. Another is SilverFast, but I don't know if it supports the 1640XL. Both are not free, so you probably won't use them unless you have special requirements since both are advanced programs.

Of course, when you use non-Epson software, the available scanning controls will be different than Epson's. You might get different (fewer or more) features than the Epson software might provide, but you always get the basics.

Thank you very much!

Will give those options a go and write back.

I had something the same following an Apple update when I found the Scanner had completely disappeared from the printer menu (HP Photosmart C6280 ) It had been OK up to this point and was connected via Ethernet.

I did try the suggested options and while I had some success I did not like that option.

What I found fixed the issue was to reconnect the printer via USB and take it off Ethernet connection.

Have no idea why, but the Scanner reappeared in the printer menu and was fully functional as was prior to the update.

My HP printer is now obsolete as far as HP is concerned but runs driver 5.0.5 which was the last version and is running on macOS Sierra 10.12.6 no problem.

Cheers, best of luck. :-)
