Does anyone have a specific recommendation for a 42mm to SA mount adapter for this camera. One you have used and not had a problem removing the adapter.

Thanks in advance.

I don't have any m42 lenses but 3 adapters all made in Japan. "CSm422". I was able to mount it using a thin screw driver inserted ito a mounting hole and then dismount it the same way. It is more difficult with the H than with the older cameras - pre merrill. Haven't tried it with Merrill. I could ship you one if you don't have this type.

Buy one or two cheap Sigma SA back caps and use it as a "spanner" to install or remove the adapter ring from the M42 lens. It provides enough grip to do the job both ways effectively, and using cheap Chinese caps means breaking one won't break the bank. Just make sure your other hand has a firm grip on the lens body itself when doing this (don't hold onto only the focus ring - you may break the stop pin or worse).

The bayonet fitting on my sdQ-H is a very snug fit with an OEM Sigma lens and with the adapter ring on an M42 lens it is often the case that the M42 thread breaks free before the bayonet releases, which leaves the ring in place on the camera and you either have to tighten the lens back with a bit of muscle to stop this happening (not the best feeling when you're forcing something on a nice new camera's mount), or you have to try to remove the ring with the hot filter awfully close to your fingers. So it's best that the ring is very tight on the lens instead.

I've seen written that some drill holes in the ring collar and use a proper lens spanner, but it is a lot easier to use a back cap as a spanner instead - slipping with a lens spanner is the best way to indelibly scratch something, be it the rear element or the lens body, something that cannot happen if you use a plastic cap.

That said, any of the cheap adapter rings will work OK, although don't expect them to exactly zero the lens at the centre mark - all of my M42 lenses seat a bit to the left or right, and one which din't seat far enough over to achieve infinity meant some careful abrasion work on the ring's mating surface using a sharpening stone to get the lens on far enough to achieve infinity. If you need to do this, take it easy - it doesn't take many microns removed to make a big difference in how far over the lens turns to tighten fully.

I bought mine from this guy. Liked it so much, I bought two more. Very high quality.

Hi Tony,

did this have infinity focus on the SD Q H? and did you buy extra units to mount them to your lenses directly?

Thanks,

Mike
It should but I only have SD15 and sdQ cameras. Yes, I use them for my M42 Super Takumars, 3 at a time. These lenses are only used on the SD15 because the sdQ has exposure issues when stopping down with them for some reason.

SA-mount that mates to the camera (see that the end closest to the electrical contacts in the camera is grooved for good clearance)

Surface at bottom to press in the M42 lens auto aperture pin.

Yes this is a very good adapter. It is one of very few that have an extra surface (shown in the bottom photo) to press in the auto aperture pin on the M42 lens so it does not abrade or short out any of the electronic contacts in the camera.

Mine fits tightly on my SD Quattro but was perfect on my SD1. Other than the tight fit, it works well and does not cause any damage to my SD Quattro so far as I can tell.

Because of the high cost I have only one of these. I bought several cheap ones before I found out about this one, and they are OK only if your M42 lens has no auto aperture pin.

Caveat: others report no problems with the cheap adapters but I do not recommend them.

Also, if the M42 lens extends behind the M42 mount (into the camera) under any conditions it will damage or break the "dust protector" in your Sigma. Be very careful about this.

The thing on the right is a tool for removing it, which is really needed on the sdQ cameras.

I suppose you could buy an ordinary one for each lens and attach it to the lens with Loctite.

A PK T-mount adapter works OK. So does the PK ring for the BPM bellows (a long discontinued item, but I found one).
