I'm heading to Tokyo in a couple of weeks. Which vintage lens would you grab to take along? Some street and landscape shooting.

I have an a6000. Of course I have the kit lens that comes with the camera and I've bought a few other manual lens from ebay and resale etc and I still have time to get more. Man it's fun playing with these...

The second question ... is it possible to find a lens in Japan in a second hand camera shop or are they just too expensive over there?

I appreciate any help or comments! I'm a newbie just trying to learn

I would bring a lens that I feel comfortable shooting with. Small size is also a plus, less weight is always better while travelling.

On APSC, a 35-40mm fast prime is a good travel companion. Pair it with a wider autofocus-lens and you will be pretty much covered for a city-trip. If you like to shoot tele, add a longer lens too.

I've never been in Japan, but what I read from others is that it is sort of photo-gear-heaven :-)

Have fun, and dont worry too much about your gear, you will be fine.

If you plan to do street photography in cramped Japan, I would bring 24mm equivalent. Just my opinion.

Try mapcamera in Tokyo (shinjuku). I know there are other shops, but I know that pretty well. It sells every brand, both new and second hand. Have a look at there website, too. There is also fotoborse. Never been there. For new gear try Yodobashi camera. I know a large one in kichijoji. They have 90% of camera sold on display, ready to try (even expensive models like D5, or medium format like pentax 645d...). Prices are quite good normally. But that also depends on the yen exchange rate.

have a nice trip.

I used an SEL1018 for most of my shots, Shopping in Tokyo for odd stuff is a lot of fun and shops and dealers are usually very honest. As with all specialty items most dealers ahve regular clients who get first looks at teh really good stuff but the search is fun and and any item you consider will be accurately described, even in back alley out of the way places.

Do it more for the trip than for the prize.

Have a look here for places in Tokyo, there's a Google map and the writer has pinned a lot of second hand camera shops:

Day time photos will be fine with most lenses, but night time you might want something fast with fast AF.

Along with your Sony kit lens, I would be taking my Hexanon AR 28mm and 40mm lenses.

I lived in Tokyo 2001-06 and it was a great place to find used equipment.

I have visited Japan and used various combinations of lenses. For my next trip, I have decided to take a 24mm lens, a 35mm lens and a 75mm lens. The one lens I know will get the most use is the 35mm.
