Hi,

Can I assume that canon effectively region lock their ink so ink bought in the USA won't work with a UK printer?

Was hoping to pick some up when I come over in October as the UK price has sky rocketed since I bought my last lot.

Cheers

Dan

At least Amazon.com shows for a complete Canon CLI-42 set a price around 114$, which are around 92€. In Germany you get the complete set for around 80€ and as long as you are buying inside the EU you don't have regional lock problems.

Maybe checking some other European countries could be worth a look.

The Pro-100 specifically the CLI-42 is not locked to regions. Generally Canon will issue a new model number for the chip if this was the case. Now the same model of printer would be sold elsewhere BUT if the printer model was locked down it would be done with a different chip model. For example if the UK Pro-100 was locked down to the EU then it could have a model like say CLI-82 instead. Not REAL.

Note the example is just for EXAMPLE and not in existence and stricly as an example of a possible situation.

As an initial matter, checking just now, a CLI-42 inkset for the Pro-100 is very slightly cheaper from Amazon UK than from Amazon US, using 1 UKP = 1.31 USD. (And Amazon US has tended to be the cheapest source.)

But no, I would not assume that at all. On the contrary, I think Pro-100 ink is wordwide-functional. Here in the U.S. I've bought two sets of Pro-100 inks (CLI-42) that appear to have originally been sold by Canon Netherlands or something like that, and which were about 15 or 20% cheaper than usual--I suspect they are 'gray market' inks. This They work fine.

Note that some Canon products do appear to have region-specific versions. Is you have a TS9020 all-in-one, it takes CLI-271 photo ink cartridges. The U.K. / E.U. version is the TS9050, which takes CLI-571 ink cartridges. The Asia / Pacific version is the TS9060, and I suspect it takes CLI-671 ink cartridges. Would a CLI-271 work in a TS9050? I have no idea, but it wouldn't surprise me if the answer is no.

Thanks all for the replies. I got the 8 set last year from Amazon for about £65, now they are about £85. I guess with the exchange rate and USA sales tax added there is not a lot between them. But as Ive already got my dollars sorted out its a bit more stomach-able to get them in the states.

Good shout on other European countries though, ill have a look.

While I knew that Canon puts the same inks in different and incompatible cartridges and markets a printer as "new" or as a different model I had no idea they locked down cartridges by geographic region.

Canon marketers are more diabolical than I thought!

Yes, I noticed the Amazon price has shot up maybe thanks to Brexit? I've set a price alert on a couple of shopping sites for £65 but no luck yet. The excessive ink price price has reduced how much I print. I suggested to Canon that they would probably sell more ink cartridges and earn more profit if they reduced their prices - but no joy yet!
