hi

in d3400, when i use the flash in daylight as fill-in, how can i control its power?

how can i control the ratio between daylight and the flash?

thanks

works in PASM modes (at least on my D3300) press the flash pop up button hold it in, now while holding the flash button in also press and hold the +/- button . while they are both held down turn the control dial to increase /decrease the flash compensation value.

In addition to the above...

Mind the default flash mode is "balanced" TTL-BL, so it won't like to do much flash if the "subject" already appears brighter than the "background". With a speedlight, you can switch to plain TTL flash mode. This isn't an option with the pop-up; but you can cheat by turning the metering mode from Matrix to Spot, then flash mode will also turn more alike plain TTL because TTL-BL relies on Matrix.

There's also the wise old-school suggestion to use the M mode when using flash. So that you set the exposure for the ambient light manually, an use automatics only for the flash exposure. So you decide if you're doing key-flash, fill-flash, or something in between. Otherwise, the camera will decide instead of you ;)

i have the impression that it wil be correct only if i use manual exposure settings AND manual flash settings. that's the traditional way to balance daylight and flash.

imho, since i use P, everything is calculated by the camera, and the shorter exposure will be compensated via the f-stop and modified flash power, via a formula about the ratio between flash and daylight. i try to change the ratio.

thanks anyway

Why not just use flash compensation (FC) to modify the flash contribution (Spot metering can sometimes allow for better control of FC)

Remember that the type of Fill-Flash you get depends on lens and metering mode:

You can also take full control rather than using Flash Exposure Compensation (but I don't recommend this):

Another strategy for controlling ambient versus flash light is to raise the ISO setting.
(Using flash is the only time I explicitly raise my ISO setting.)
