Hi,

I have a new Canon Pro-1. May I ask what is the best Media Type to use for Canson Rag Photograhique 210gsm? Don't seem to be able to find ithe info online. I'm printing from Lr.

Also, is it necessary to tick the 'Black and White Photo Print' if I'm printing monochrome?

Thanks for your help:)

From Canson website: other fineart paper 1 if you are using their icc profile.

The black&white mode is a driver feature and results in printer manages color. If you want to let LR manages colors then you can't really use the feature. But if the icc profile is good it produces neutral prints anyway. Otherwise a custom icc profile would be the solution.

I've made a couple of 4 x 6" prints from Lr using the maker's icc profile. The color seem to be on the warm side, lack contrast and muddy blacks.

Also, made a print Managed by Printer. The print is cool, lacks contrast and better blacks.

Both prints look dull compared to screen image.

My monitor is calibrated with Spyder 4. What might I be doing wrong? Thanks.

did you use the softproof function in LR?

the problems you describe (other than the color being off a bit) are what you get w/ matte type papers. If you're used to super glossy, you will NEVER get the same amount of pop, black and contrast. It's the nature of the beast.

The simple adjustment curve technique described in this seven-minute video is often helpful for your issue of contrast in prints:

And while matte papers do not give the pop that glossy papers can produce, there are matte papers that do give rich, satisfactory blacks and contrast. Just don't put the print next to a glossy print of the same photo. One example is Canson's Printmaking Rag, printed with an Epson Sure Color printer.

Just be sitting down when you see the price of Printmaking Rag paper.

An *excellent* paper is Epson Hot Press Bright.

Hi to all,

I am excited to report that I'm back in the game. The Pro-1 does make beautiful prints. My mistake. I used the wrong icc profile initially that led to dull images.

Having transited from Epson R3000, I am quite aware that matte paper do not yield the same contrast as glossy prints. I am more confortable with matte paper as it looks more natural to me.

Hi Howard,

No I do not use soft proofing. Just couldn't get the hang of it. And no, I do not intentionally go for the 'pop' that's often mentioned. Much prefer the 'ordinary' look of matte papers. Much quieter:)

In my area, we have few choices of papers, particularly rag paper. My favourite is Museo Porfolio Rag. Sadly it is no longer available here. I've had Epson Hot Press Natural (nice paper) shipped to me, but it's too expensive to do that often. The only suitable paper I can get here is Canson Rag Photographique. It make beautiful prints. I hope it continues to be available in my little country.

Hi Charles2,

You are right about the characteristics of matte papers. They work for me:)

Thanks you all:)
