Wifi for D5 without spending $750

Hello!

Did anyone try the Tp-Link WR902AC Travel Router with the D850 yet?

I tried Camranger (which used with D3s only before) but it is extremely slow to transfer the huge files of the D850 - and I already decreased size and quality to the medium setting. I use it as remote on a basketball board, so I'm shooting fast burst here. So I'm looking into a faster WiFi transfer.

Would the Tp-Link WR902AC Travel Router work with the Camranger software?

Thanks for your input!

HM
No, but I used 902ac with D810.

Did you test Camranger at home?

Test it first. I bet it will be faster. I think you ran in to interference from other 2.4Mhz devices. Also, can you change channels and channel frequency?

I had to change channels and frequency with 902ac too. Because 902ac has more of them so far I am avoiding interference.

Another problem might be USB

902ac is not going to work with D850 like with D5 because D850 does not have Ethernet port so you need to use USB cable and that means you have to change FW. Will it be faster? I don't know. I think there is some kind of the bottleneck in these cameras. For example I can shoot D5 and get 54-55 RAW shots (Ethernet or USB) before camera has to transfer so it stops taking pictures for a while. But the same thing happens with D810 even though files are much larger. If I shoot JPGs I get unlimited transfer.

So my theory is that camera does something very long preparing for transfer but the transfer itself is very quick regardless of the router.

902ac is only $45 on amazon so you have to experiment on your own with D850.

I will find out which frequencies band they use for the public wifi and for staff wifi. There is a whole bunch of wifi networks used for organisational purposes. Then I will see if I need to change the frequency of the Camranger. For sending live to the FTP of my agency I am using a LAN cable connection. So I can dedicate the wifi to Camranger exclusively.
Both at the same time?

I have the TL-WR902AC ordered & it's on it's way. My camera I want to use with this is the D850. I have a Camranger but it's just to slow when shooting RAW & it crashes after viewing one image. I have Camera Control 2. I would like to use CC2 to control the camera & download into a watched folder into Lightroom. The main thing I want is the transfer of files at a faster speed. Controlling every aspect of the camera is purely secondary.

So I'm looking for a good source for what I need to do to make the TL-WR902AC work with the D850. From what I've read here this is my understanding.

1. I need to use the TL-WR902AC as an Access Point and the TL-WR902AC Firmware that comes with it allows only the Ethernet connection to be used as an access point.

2. I will need to Flash the Firmware to allow the use of the USB to be used as an access point, if it's possible. Anyone know of a Firmware that will make this happen & where to find it.

3. It's been a long time since I used Camera Control 2. I upgraded it to the newest version that works with the D850. Anything special to make it work with the TL-WR902AC.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, that is why I only use it with D5. Read below for D850 since it does not have Ethernet connection.

But. Once you flash there is very limited way to come back. I know of one for 3040 but it is kind of simple and complicated at the same time. Simple once I remember how to do it, complicated because I don't remember. What I do remember is that it is all in software and no hardware modification is required.

I did not flash 902AC. No need to. But I flashed and successfully went back to original on 3040.

Also, you need to get the client software from the same site.

I think nothing.

Once you have connection with the camera established CC2 takes over.

Thanks for the quick response. That's just what I needed. If all fails, one good thing is this router is not that expensive if it becomes a brick.

I will give it a try.
1. If you succeed buy the second 902ac just in case. Tp-link stopped making 3040 so they might stop making 902ac too.

If you brick it do a research on Solarwinds TFTP server. It requires some playing with parameters but that is software I used to unbrick/change 3040 to original FW. And of course you need to download original FW too.

Thanks! It it works I will purchase the second one for a backup.

I see one stumbling block. I noticed the VirtualHere software is only for Ver1 of the router. Having not received the router yet I'm assuming it'll be Ver3, since TP's website shows they have a newer Version now. I've e-mailed the VirtualHere support to see if Ver3 is in the works.

Probably, Micheal has already wrote it but forgot to update. He is in Australia so he is only available at night.

Thanks I look forward to hearing from him.
So did you get in contact with Michael?

In the mean time something bizarre happened to my setup.

I ordered V3 and received it the same day from Amazon we had last chat.

I connected the new router but camera would not connect.

So I pulled the old router and the camera does not connect either.

So I decided to start from scratch on the old router. I reset to factory default and disabled 2.4GHz plus setup Static IP. Now camera connects but CC2 still says camera is not recognized. While ripping some hair from my head and some other places I took one photo and it showed up on my computer screen even though I did not here a beep from computer like before and CC2 still says no camera.

Nikon Wireless Utility allows to set up downloading folder so I did.

Basically it works now but CC2 is bypassed.

Here come the fun part.

Before I was able to take 54 RAW and camera would freeze until some files would transfer. NOW, no limitation. I took 166 images like machine gun and it transferred them all. I even tried to take pictures during transfer and camera doesn't care. And that is on the old router.

Next I am going to try the new router with the same setup. The only problem is with this setup I can't control the camera remotely.

Yes He contacted me & as you said he has V3 ready but didn't have the router to test before he posted. So when it arrives I will try the flash.

You must be on favorable terms with Amazon. I ordered mine last week & it will not arrive until Wednesday.
I connected the new router but camera would not connect.
So what I understand is that you didn't flash the new router but out of the box you had this problem.

Strange.

I was going to test this, because controlling the camera is nice but my mine concern is the reliable transfer & the speed.

Good luck! If that works reliably to transfer files fast I may not flash mine until I know it's a safe & reliable procedure.

I am the Prime member for many years. I basically buy only on Amazon with several hundreds purchases every year. Why not. They deliver in two days most of the time and many times even on the same day. Plus they have sales and sales for Prime members only. I don't have to drive anywhere.
I connected the new router but camera would not connect.

That is correct. I spent an hour with TP-Link tech support. They have no idea why. So was told to exchange it. I contacted Amazon and they are sending one for free. I will get it on Wednesday.

The last time I used it was in May. I photographed few celebrities at the convention with a whole bunch of fans. It was about 100 fans and it was very fast but I got stuck on 54 photos. In the mean time there was FW upgrade for D5. Maybe that is what causing the problem with V1. At least I can transfer the photos now.

No, you have to flash otherwise it would not work at all. If you want to go wireless that is. With a long USB cable you don't need anything.

And it not just flashing. You need to download the client software from the same site and configure it properly. I think there are instructions somewhere on the site.

I do the same as you purchasing from Amazon Prime. I've been a Prime member for a number of years. I live in a smaller town so would have to drive a distance to purchase many of the times I can buy from them. The two day free delivery is fantastic. When I ordered the router it was on backorder until the 12th so they shipped it on the 12th. You must have been at the front of the line.

l have the USB cable's for hardwired tethering that works fine for studio shooting on more static sessions. I have a camera stand with a laptop platform so it's fairly mobile in studio. I would like the faster wireless for faster moving situations & outside locations.

Thanks for your information & help.

It is also possible that because you live in smaller town the same day delivery is not possible for you. I live in Los Angeles. That is just my guess.

BTW, I believe that once you flash that 3 position switch can be in any position. That is what Michael told me for 3040. But before you flash the switch should be in Share/ETH position.
