6D2 or 6D for astro?

A bit silly to ask a question about a camera that has not even been released yet, but I noticed in one spec sheet the 6D2 is expected to be 1.5 stops better at high ISO.

The 6D as far as I know has been the cleanest Canon so far for high ISO noise so that would be impressive. The 6D has some of the nicest astro shots I have seen from Canon cameras and there are a lot of good ones.

I am not familiar with dual pixel performance and high ISO. As the pixels are basically in pairs each one is small, do cameras with this technology (I believe it started with the 70D) still have good high ISO performance or does dual pixel technology mean high ISO noise tends to be higher?

I am planning on getting an astro modified 6D. I just wonder if the new 6D2 would be significantly better for that or is it likely to be more of an incremental improvement which is how Canon normally seems to evolve.

I share your anticipation for the 6Dii and its high ISO low noise performance. If it has it, then I expect to eventually upgrade from my 6D. However, I intend to wait for the test reports that will document whether and just how much high ISO low noise improvement the 6Dii really has.

If it turns out the 6Dii is only marginally better than the 6D in that respect, then I'll just hold on to my 6D until it needs to be replaced.

To me, there is so much more than high ISO performance to be concerned about fixing from the 6D (which I use) for low light and/or long exposures.

The biggest issue is the horrible amp glow that the 6D has at higher ISOs and long exposures, especially when the files are pushed (it doesn't take much). The 5D4 seems to have a couple magnitudes better amp glow performance, so I'm expecting the same or better with the 6D2.

Next would be hot pixels at long exposures (regardless of ISO). The 6D was decent for it's day, but again that issue is better in the 5D4, so again I expect the same or better with the 6D2.

A proper intervalometer would be next on my list, and I don't mean time lapse video with a 4K output, although this seems something I will want to see.

I, as with you and others, feel the high ISO and DR should be a good chunk better. Personally I feel the low ISO only needs about 1 1/2 stops better DR. It's the 1600 ISO plus where I hope DR is much better, kind of like the Sony A9 is. This would also mean that the correlating SNR be much better throughout the ISO range.

And last but not least, I hope that when DPReview does its test, it doesn't use the same old Canon 85mm f/1.8 that it has been using on Canon sensor tests. It just isn't anywhere close to being as sharp (nor transmission) as lenses used on other manufacturers bodies, and really gimps the test.

All that said, I'm really looking forward to seeing DPReview and DxOMARK tests.

The 5Div's price tag is also a couple of magnitudes greater, too.

It's very close to the announcement, so unless you have an immediate pressing need you may as well wait. It might be a while, though, for reviews of production units.

Wait a sec, I just have to polish my fortune crystal ball.

Alright... I foresee, 6D2 will be very similar in high ISO. However, it will have more dynamic range.

To further enhance your forsight I also see a camera that will take photos. LOL
