Hi.

I have a a7TII and need a long lens for photographing wildlife.

I already have a LA-EA3 Adapter and a SAL70400G 70-400mm A-mount

that I used to use with my a77.

Now I see that Sony is finally releasing a 100-400 FE lens (end of July)

that would fit my a7RII without an adaptor.

I think both lenses are about F 4.5-5.6.

So my question is--besides not having to use an adaptor--is there any reason

to think that the new 100-400mm lens would give noticeably better results with my

camera?

Thank you

Nobody knows offcourse. The 70-400 is a very good lens. The canon 100-400 is slightly better though ,so I would imagine the new Lens to be on par with that, plus it supports tc's and native focus modes

I have the Canon 100-400 version 1 and with the a7r2 and the a72 it does not focus well at the longer lengths with the Metabones IV adapter. It's fine for some auto focus at shorter lengths and with manual focus - but manual can be hard with wildlife that's moving. The Sony lens would undoubtedly focus and track better than the Canon with adapter. The A mount might be fine I don't have experience with that.

Native will give you all AF modes (adapted is very limited), and AF at full speed burst (vs Low max). Not as important on the A7R II, but it's significant on faster cameras like the A6000-A6500 and A9.

How does AF works (speed, accracy) with your A mount 70-400 and LA-EA3 ?

The 70-400G Under normal light conditions i can say is fast enough and accurate.

Between a7II and a6300 the a6300 is faster under the same light conditions and a9 must be faster than a6300/6500.

The best option will be to buy the 100-400 FE with all AF advantages the system gives like.

1x & 2X teleconverter AF compatible.

Lock on AF

Eye focus

DMF (direct manual focus)... with focus peaking and focus magnification

Lens stabilizer

I would guess the new FE lens has faster autofocus, supporting all AF features, and gives probably more reliable focus with teleconverters.

If money is not a limiting factor, I would go for the FE lens. I am tempted to buy this lens myself.

I shot the Sony 70-400mm G2 with LA-EA3, for awhile, and was never completely happy with focus performance. I expect that the new FE 100-400mm will have dual-focus motors and be specifically tuned for the mirrorless cameras, so the performance will be far superior.
