If I can extract an excellent image from video with the Canon 5D Mark 4, then why do I have to be confined by a 7 frames per second situation. Can I not take a video of BIF then grab it from video, or is something lost in translation?

Given the choice between excellent equipment and excellent skill, I'll go for the skill every time.
In 4k, you can do 30 FPS 8.8 MP stills. I take the video and grab it in post and export it as .tiff and then work on it.

However, if you're gonna need to do serious cropping and things like that, might want to use the 7 FPS and 30 megapixels.

If you're asking WHY it's like this, with video it's using an electronic shutter that goes off 30 times per second, it would take a lot of processor power for it to do that and give you raw files, it would take more than we currently have in technology to give you 30 megapixel raw files.

When using the mirror, you aren't using an electronic shutter.

The reason we don't use electronic shutters all the time, especially in action photography, is because it has a lot of down sides, such as rolling shutter. That is currently being worked on and improved however it's not fully there yet.

At some point in the future we will be recording 30 megapixel video in which you'll be able to extract raw files from at probably 240 frames per second. But were not close to that yet. It'll happen though, by the time that happens electronic shutter will have no issues and will be better than the mechanical shutter.

What is lost in translation is that your shutter speed in video is the inverse of double the frame rate. So 30 fps would be 1/60 sec, not even close for whats needed for BIF!!!

I imagine the OP was using video frame grab for photography situation, in such case you can raise shutter speed to whatever you prefer.

I think it's very difficult to nail the focus plus you don't get to use raw if you need a lot of adjustments.

I doubt that is so, given the context of the OP, they wish to choose from that 30 fps to get the right moment. There are ML cameras that have a burst mode capable of that, but not so with the 5D mkIV. They better off sticking with the 7 fps!!!

As you can tell from my question, I don't really use video much, probably safer to say "never." So I thought logically, if many aren't grabbing images from video to use as a stand alone image, there is something I don't understand.

Thanks for the clarification.
