New Lens Rumor

I'm gonna throw out a wacky guess. Since Andrea (I believe that's how his name is spelled) mentioned 'unusual specs', I'm guessing this mystery lens will be a tilt-shift zoom, something like 16-21mm/F4. I have no idea if a tilt-shift can be a zoom, just spit-balling.

And for the love of all that is holy, Sony please announce a 35mm sister lens to the FE 55/1.8--similar size/weight, optical/mechanical excellence. I think many FE shooters would line up to buy that lens, myself included.

Sony needs some fast tele prime/zoom lenses for the A9, another small pro-sumer prime is probably not what's on the horizon. The short prime space is already crowded. I am guessing a 200/2 or 300/2.8 or 500/4... think Olympic lenses, where they have positioned the A9, is likely to see new glass (think rather expensive)

Ha, I have no idea either. A T/S though could be in the works, the Sony's a popular RE/Architecture camera.

Though I like the Sony Zeiss lenses I don't think it'd be the ZA badge since they already have the 35/2.8. I think it'd be an f/1.8 designed like the 85/1.8 and 50/1.8 (better be with the 85's focus motor!) I'd pre-order immediately...

Sadly you're likely right, but a guy can dream can't he?

I'm dying for a 24mm 1.8 or 1.4. The 28mm is fun, but it's not that fast, nor wide.

A prime - something long and fast for the A9 is likely. But hey, who knows, maybe it will be a fisheye :-)

I'd think that's a possibility, but with the Batis 18 & 25 and Loxia 21 and the rumored 16-35/2.8 coming I'd be surprised if it was a wide prime...

Of course same can be said of my wish of a 35/1.8 with the 35/2.8, 35/1.4, Loxia 35 and Voigtlander's coming...

I can't think of any reason that a zoom couldn't be designed as a tilt/shift, it would just have to have a larger image circle, worst case scenario, it's a bit bigger than normal.

I for one would be very interested in a T/S zoom.

I have a Canon FD SSC 35/2.8 Tilt/Shift, I love it, and would love the TSE 17, but the size and weight are significantly higher than I'd like, a compact T/S Zoom would be so very tempting to me.

A nice 40-45mm prime would be popular I think, I myself do like the FOV from lenses in this FL range.

I agree that announcing a tele prime would make a lot of sense. But if Sony had such a lens ready to go, it probably would have been announced alongside the A9. Would love to see it though, a lot of people on this forum are waiting for longer lenses.

Maybe Sony's been listening and the 35/2 in an 85/1.8 package is coming to make us all happy?

  • "Could be a Pancake Kit Zoom. Bundled with the new A7III."
Wins my vote for the best suggestion, an E1650 for FF :-)

I thought they were talking about a 1.8 135 G yesterday? With the wide end covered so well by Sony and so many others and the money they just spent on the A9 and desire to go after the sports and wildlife market anything but a 300 or 500 prime does not even make sense. They are hurting on the long end and the A9 has lenses galore use for everything but med to longer telephoto but that is just my two cents. To entice the Canikon users they need to show they are serious now about the longer end to further legitimize the A9
You are speaking about the high end users, and true, all this is very valid.

Which is the most often chosen/used lens on these 'lower end' cameras? Yep, the E1650 kit lens for APS-C and the FE2870 kit lens for FF.

Imagine an FE2470P lens on the A7x cameras being just about as big as the FE35Z :-)

Good point Henry, but they have a lot of lenses in the wide to mid range and it just seems that a mid to long telephoto prime which they do not even have one would be the most logical (not necessarily most profitable) route to me.

Speaking of small I just got my Loxia 85 this afternoon and I have been imagining how kewl it would be to have a 24-70 or 70-200 in a small size like this. At the rate of new breakthroughs who knows what we will have down the road.

I am really getting into the Loxia's and smaller lenses right now so much that I put the 2 & 3 year drops and spills on my Loxia's. I have large hands and these little guys are heavy and of all the lenses I have these seem most likely to slip out of my hands and as heavy as they are surely they will damage themselves. Also I think I will own these lenses for a long time supposedly they are good for 125 plus megapixels or more and a super travel set up.

 Loxia 85 2.4 on a6500
Loxia 85 2.4 on a6500

Loxia 85mm 2.4 on A7rII
Loxia 85mm 2.4 on A7rII

I'm hoping for a 24-105 F4, but that isn't really 'unusual'. I use my 24-240 like a 24-120 as it tends to fall apart after 130mm, so its just a heavy 24-105!!

Hmmmm...

"There will be another lens announced with the long-expected 1635GM in very near future. It will have VERY surprising parameters"

Lets guess...

- Fresnel based telephoto prime lens? 300? 400? 500? 600?

- 500mm mirror?

- Extra wide? 10-24?

- Tlilt Shift?

- Fisheye ?

- Specilized Bokeh lens? STF? -> Alread announced

- Super fast prime?, 105/1.4? 85/1.2? 50/1.2?

- Super fast Zoom? 24-35/2?

what else...

35 f2 and 85 f1.8 are hardly unusual. If there is soemone testing a prototype with a A9, it will be a sports lens.
