The CP-E2 is a modified version of the original Compact Battery Pack E. This new version accepts "AA" size lithium batteries, as well as standard "AA" alkalines and rechargeable NiCd's.

A friend of mine who shoots with a Nikon had one of thses battery
packs and i really like it cause you can your NiMH batteries with
it. I found a Canon one at B&H but it take 6 "C" size batteries
which to me would seem a bit heavy.

Either one of above plus it also attaches to the underside of
camera with 1/4" thumb screw.
Ah, that's good to know!

I've been thinking of getting a battery pack (need better recycling time), but I will probably try to find a ST-E2 first.

Hmm, 100-400L mounted on a D60 with battery grip + the CP-E2 battery pack... I need to work out at the gym more! :-)

Guillermo,

The reason i would want the CP-E2 over Sunpak battery back is for one cost. The Sunpak is $300 and the CP-E2 is $120. I can use my NiMH AA batteries which i already have lots of. And the Sunpak is NiCd and will create a memory so not quiet as good as NiMH batteries. And last when the battries go bad all i have to do is buy new battries @ $2 each compared to a new battery pack @ $300

I've modified this pack by using 4 Sony Li Ion cells #26650 3000mah in pararel & then in serial connect to the pack by alligator clips. Recycling time for the 550ex in auto mode should be around 1 second or less. Sychro with my 1d & 1v in high burst rate of about 3 to 4. The TPE pack is a high voltage whilst the CPE2 is low voltage pack.

Wilbert,

I first looked at this battery pack but thought it would to heavy with the "C" batteries. How have is it and does it seem to heavy to carry around??

I've had the Canon Transistor Pack E for a number of years along with the NiCd pack E and the Charger TP. The battery pack contains 6 sub-C batteries soldered in series. Over the years, some of the cells have gone bad and I have replaced them with some I bought at Radio Shack. This is a high voltage pack and recycles the 550EX in about 1 sec. with a fully charged pack. It is not too large and not too heavy. It is comfortably worn over the shoulder with the supplied strap. I don't think this battery pack is a very attractive proposal with the battery pack that accepts 6 C-cells and was quite expensive with the NiCd pack and charger.

The CP-E2 is much smaller and cheaper and can accomodate the newer NiMH AA cells, which are more powerful than Nicads and will recyle your flash in about 2 sec.

There are other alternatives such as the Quantum battery packs, etc. The new Sunpack is attractive but expensive.

William,

The main reason why not to use the Digital Camera Battery is cost. 30 watt battery is $245 + $195 for cable + $ 40 for carrying case = $480. The Canon CP-E2 is $120 and uses 6 AA NiMH battries ($2 each) which you can replace when the cells go bad. With the Digital Camera Battery you would have to spend $250 on a new battery.

Scott:

If you replace the "C" size batteries like I did, it's very light weight with 4pcs #26650 Li Ion batteries. I've the Turbo Z as well cost me $400 maybe recycling a bit faster tho. I should say for the performance, cost & weight the TPE is hard to beat with 6000mah batteries power.

Wilbert,

Will the TPE take NiMH "C" batteries. If so it might be worth a closer look. Do you have a pic of your TPE to show what you did??

Thanks

Of course you can use any "C" size batteries in the magazine supplied. But I noticed the recycling time not as fast as I like. So I came up the idea of modifying the pack to suit my needs. Sure I can send you the pic with the setup if I can have your email address.
