I really enjoy macro (I also enjoy landscape and astronomical) and currently use both a 5D 3 and and 80D mainly with the sigma 180. I'm considering upgrading and passing the 5D3 to my daughter, Since after macro most of my shots are national park landscapes I was thinking of going with the 5Dsr (it's also a pretty good deal in refurb) I'd like some opinions as to which would be best. Are people using the sr for macro, how do they like it? I'm sure the 5DIV would be great as well. What do others think? Thanks for any input.

You can call me tour daughter and pass me the 5d3....

I havent seen any macro from those cameras. Be interesting because of the super high resolution though. Curious mostly to see how good large crops look...ahhhh crops. That what kind of stinks about full frame for macro. Its at kind of a disadvantage in this realm. 50mpx and ya crop to be the same size as your 80d and your back to close to the same resolution...a little more I guess.

Well, honestly, using the 180, even with full frame, you can get in pretty tight and not much cropping is necessary so I was thinking about the amount of detail (assuming focus is solid) would be a big improvement. Has anybody used this combo?

P.S. my daughter doesn't want any competition for the upgrade, she got my old MK II

;-)

Whether its a 180, a 100, a 65, a 60mm, or a 50mm with extension tubes, 1:1 magnification is 1:1 magnification.

So, on your 80d, you fit 22.5mm in the frame on the long edge, while on a 5ds, you would get 36mm on long edge with any 1x macro, which is the 1.6x crop factor. The 80d has 24.2mpx and 5ds has 50.6. If you cropped to the same size, it would be brought down to roughly 31.5 mpx. So roughly 7mpx more resolution.

After thinking about this, Im really curious to see a side by side. I hope someone with both cameras can do a comparison for us. Though i doubt that 7mpx will be all that noticeable on its own, the sensor pixel size might yield better quality. The 80d has its own, very up to date and improved sensor though. My guess would be, and I could def be wrong, that at low ISOs and with good light/flash, they will be very similar. Shot without flash at higher ISOs, the 5ds will look better...but then again, ive read people say shadow recover and lowlight on the 80d is really strong.

The way I read the specs, the 5Dsr should be fantastic for landscape with 51mp and even using the in-camera 1.6x crop, it would still nearly equal the 5D3 you have now for macro.

My interests vary from nature landscape to macro and that looks like the type of camera I'd want.
