I want to take an hour long unattended video with my ZS19. It turned off after about 20 minutes. It still seemed to have power and memory left. Is that the limit before it shuts down? Any way around that?

Thanks.

ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/camera/om/dmc-zs20_en_om.pdf

see page 19. The limit varies depending on settings, but the max is about 30 minutes. As far as I know, there is no way around that.

The EU Customs apparently considers a camera that can take video clips longer than 29 minutes and 59 seconds to be a video camera, and charges a higher duty than for a consumer level still camera, So the manufacturers hobble the video clip length on their cameras; in some cases even those sold outside the EU.

Mmmm...I know,l my ZS30 can shoot over an hour.

Maybe choose lower resolution...or MP4..see if that allows for, more time

ok, but I did not run out of memory, FWIW.

Have you actually shot a continuous mp4 or AVCHD video that was over an hour? The reason I ask is that the advanced manual for the ZS30 clearly states a recording limit of 29 m 59 s. The battery and a reasonably sized memory card certainly have the capacity to shoot over 1 hour of video, but according to Panasonic, the camera will shoot only up to about 30 m of continuous video. Then you would have to press the Record button again to start a new video.

Yes.I have....but perhaps the US version has no cap on time, limit, it UK versions do ?

I don't have a ZS19 or ZS30, but I do have a ZS60 and ZS100. They are both US models with US manuals, and the manuals clearly state the 29 m 59 s upper limit. My first test was with the ZS60 choosing MP4 FHD 28M 60p, and the camera stopped recording after 21 m. By the way, once you start recording, the camera displays the remaining recording time in that mode (assuming that there is sufficient battery power left). Also, if the top dial is set to movies, it will show the remaining time in that mode, even before you start recording.

I then tried other MP4 modes, and they all showed various remaining recording times of 29 m 59 s or less. I then switched to AVCHD, and tried various modes, and all of them showed 29 m 59 s remaining recording, EXCEPT for the AVCHD FHD 24M 30p mode, which shows 11h 53m remaining (I have a 128 GB SDXC card formatted in the camera). I am currently testing this mode and expect it to go beyond 30 m. I will write back if it does not go beyond 30 s.

So, three things,

1 The Panasonic manual appears to be incorrect, as one video mode allows you to go beyond 30 m. This is the AVCHD FHD 24M 30p mode. The OP should try this mode if it exists on the ZS19. This is probably the mode you were using on the ZS30, ANAYV.

2 This is not the lowest data rate mode either in AVCHD or MP4, so it is odd that this particular mode is the one that allows you to go beyond 30 m.

3 On my Panasonic and Sony cameras, I shoot in 4K/30p if available, or 1080/60p, if 4K is not available, and I stopped using AVCHD some years ago because of its file structure that just got in my way. Hence this is the first time I have noticed this quirk of Panasonic cameras.

Just checked and this is what my ZS30 is set to:

AVCHD Lite @ 1280 x 720p, 60p

Image Sensor Output 60p

17Mbps

Guess it so happens I was using the only settings for video longer than 29:59 min.

I have videos over an hour long.

Since I am still using a 720p TV/Monitor this resolution is fine.

I do believe that the zs19 is limited to just less than 30 min recording time.

I have owned one, and while that limit is usually enough for me that is pretty much what you get in hd.

my zs 25 is also limited.
