Is the A Mount System Dying?

Does anyone know what Sony's long term plan is for making the A mount system cameras? I just called Tamron to order the new SP 70-200 Di VC (g2) and was told there is no version for Sony available. In fact they have a new 10-24mm lens as well that's due to come out soon. However; there will be no version for Sony available.

I don't want to invest thousands of dollars into another dead system.

YES, along with Popular Photography magazine! ....All your A mount system will self-destruct....! You must sell it immediately if not sooner!

Normally, these kinds of threads are standard fare trolling, but I checked you out, and given that you appear to have invested in the NX1 and gotten burned, I'm going to cut you some slack.

NO! A mount isn't dead - far from it. Two bodies released in the last 8 months - A68 value APS-C and A99ii - a do everything FF body. Many of us suspect release of an A77iii this Spring or Summer (but that's just speculation and we have no real information about that).

Tamron almost always releases lenses for A Mount last. That said, Sigma is not releasing any new lenses, although they admit that they have been deluged by requests, since the release of the A99ii. The A99ii has generated intense interest, is backordered all over the world, and in our admittedly biased evaluation, offers a combinations of functional abilities unmatched in the FF (or for that matter ILC) world.

In terms of your opening inquiry, the existing Tamron 70-200 USD (readily available in A mount) is a superb lens (I own it), better in my estimation than the Sony G2 70-200. The white Minolta 80-200 HS G is a superb lens as well, readily available for $800 or so used.

What are you looking to do with a camera?

...."Sony, your crap is so good"....love this quote!
yes, let me clarify that we are particularly looking for used Minolta G lenses (85, 35, and 200 esp), Sigma Art lenses of any kind, and Zeiss lenses of any kind, but esp. that POS 135 1.8.

They all are crappy and overpriced, and since A mount is clearly dead, we want to buy them from you for dirt!!

:-D .

I agree with all the answers given to this person, weather he's a troll or not, but it would really be a shame if tamron releases a 10mm 24mm zoom

and is not available for us. The non release of the new 70 200mm started to worry me a little, but I don't really care much since we have quite a few options on that focal range, but we don't have any ultrawide that goes up to 10mm. Anyway, we'll see

What third parties do regarding new lenses is often very vague and forsure nothing to base anything on, third parties often monitor sales figures and based on that they decide what they do.

No one of us have a cristal bowl to see into the future and can make answers based on facts.

Patience is the best medicine.

All the lenses you will ever need for a mount already exist. The tamron 70-200 USD will still look great in 50 years just like the Jupiter 9 does from the 1950s.

FYI I just invested around $14k in the dead a mount ;)

I suspect the a mount will already out live Nikon

I forgot to add the clarification that ALL DSLR style camera systems (and the Sony SLT A mount is operationally midway between traditional mirrored and newer mirrorless systems) appear to be doomed. Or at best, deeply marginalized niche systems, limping along through steadily reduced sales, and dramatically reduced market share, given the cellphone revolution.

That said, A mount is still in a position to transition to a pro-style mirrorless body, perhaps in one to two body iterations, when OSPDAF truly catches up to dedicated PDAF. Still not there.

Why did you buy the Samsung camera ?
Tamron never make lens for Samsung.
If no Tamron lens means the system is dead, then Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Sony E-mount are all dead too.

I bought the Samsung NX1 system because it had everything I needed in a camera. I absolutely love this camera. I want to invest in a second body in the event the NX1 dies and/or I can't get support. Also, I can't continue to upgrade/buy glass and other assessories for a dead system so that's why I'm looking a the Sony A99 II.

Not sure I understand your point. Tamron never made glass for the NX1 system; however, they did for sony's A mount system but it appears they won't be making any new glass for Sony.

A-mount isn't dead, nor will it be for some time. Go for the new Sony a99m2 and get the Sony lenses that'll take full advantage of the improved camera. There's plenty more tricks up Sony's sleeve in the future, so don't believe all the dumb rumours and nonsense scaremongering spread by uninformed dingdongs!!

Sony manager has repeated many many time last year in multiple events that they will keep develop A-mount and make new body & lenses in A-mount.

The Tamron 70-200 USD A009 and Tamron 150-600 USD A011 are both available in A-mount. I have both of them & they are excellent lens.
The G2 version mainly improve the VC only, which has no use in A-mount.
Tamron claim that the G2 has improved IQ, however according to DXO, the A022 is less sharp than A011

According to Dyxum lenses database, there are over 400 lenses available in A-mount.

Are you another FLAMER/TROLL that wants to propagate a-mount dead rumours AGAIN?? This is tiresome plus....try reading the endless list of forums on this matter.

100% correct

Also 100% correct, the only two major updates that these two lenses received has been related to the VC system, which has no use for Sony, as someone indicated above too. Tamron always always releases their lenses on Nikon, Canon mount and last one to come is Sony A mount.

I got my selft the 70-200 G1 and is an amazing lens that I just bought this past december. A month ago I got the New 85 1.8 and I got on the mail coming the 35 1.8, possibly I will add the 45 too within the next few months. Buy with confident.

On the plus side this lenses are USD or similar to Sony's SSM, they can be easily adapted to the E mount using the LAE-3 adapter.

According to Dyxum lenses database, there are over 400 lenses available in A-mount.

So, you're worried about Sony's future plans and Tamron's future plans too. You'll need an industrial espionage expert for the answers, not a camera gear forum.

Isn't the NX1 dead as the proverbial doornail? Abandoned by Samsung virtually at the alter? Samsung isn't even repairing the NX1 for owners AFAIK - if yours dies, they basically buy it back from you. That's reasonable, considering their desertion of the camera barely one year in. But it means it's dead.

I think you've probably got a solid 6-10 year life span at least for the A99ii, where it can be taking great pictures and video, even if other technology has exceeded its performance in several years.

Surf over to Dyxum and take a look at the huge database on A mount lenses. Sort by review score, and see how many great prime and zoom lenses there are. By my count, there are about 70 primes rated 4.6 and above (out of a perfect 5) and about 40 zooms. That should cover about any contingency. If you want only the very very best glass, easily as good as the Samsung OIS lenses for the NX1, there are 40 primes rated 4.8 or above and about 20 zooms. Admittedly, we have a weakness on the UWA prime front, and we need Sony to refresh some stuff. But that's about it.

More personally, I have no lens library envy of anyone in CaNikon. I have five great primes, that I would put up against virtually anything in any mount system (CZ 24/85/135 plus Sigma Art 35/50) and three zooms that I have high confidence in (CZ 24-70II, Sigma Art 24-105, Sony G270-400). Two great teleprimes (Minolta 600/Sigma 500).

What more could you be looking for? I simply can't imagine. . .

I wondered that too Martin, but actually upon review, it became clear that he is a burned Samsung NX1 owner, looking to not be deserted again. Understandable.

If Sigma or Tamron lenses is what your are going for, then you have Canon, Nikon or Sony E mount with adapters...that's it.

You won't get the full selection of Tamron and certainly not Sigma for anything outside Canon and Nikon, that is a fact.

A mount is not dead, that too is a fact. But it does suffer for being a smaller marked for Tamron and Sigma having stopped making A mount lenses altogether.

Sigma have stated there intent to make E mount lenses, and does support though E mount with MC-11 adapter. Otherwise only Canon and Nikon have the full lens selection.
