Hi everyone,

a few months ago, I bought my RX10 III, and I had been using it merely for tests up until my trip, from which I arrived yesterday.

I'm now going through the photos and being pleasantly surprised with the results, although the noise when pushing the shadows is definitely a lot more evident than with my APS-C DSLRs.

The RX10 III also made me want to experiment with video, and I filmed a bunch of footage using S-LOG2 and I'm hoping to grade and edit into a short travel film.

I recently changed my monitor, though, and I'm not sure if my images are looking good on others' monitors (since they look quite dark on my TV). Unfortunately, calibration devices are outrageously expensive here in Brazil, so I refuse to buy one (maybe I'll get one when I travel to the US again).

Here are some of the first shots from my trip, and I'd love to hear how they look on your monitor.

Hi,

owning myself the RX10M3 now for about 3 months (besides RX100 and RX10M1) I found that images like your No 1 is pushing the sensor to its limits, especially in terms of DR. It's hard to get detail in both very bright sky areas and deep shadows in the forest. But I found also that those are situations when the Zebras (mine a at 100%) help to find the balance for best possible results. In addition I'm processing from RAW in C1 and using reduced contrast settings for such scenes.

Edit: Looking at your edited first shot I noticed the same thing I noticed on my copy of the M3: a WB (AWB) pushing a bit towards blueish greens. A little bit of correction of the cam's AWB towards yellow corrected this bringing now better balanced WB from start into C1.

Hi, thanks for commenting.

The first scene had such a wide DR, I had to use HDR. And indeed, zebras are very useful for helping with setting exposure, it also helps us expose to the right in order to have lower noise.

About the AWB, I also tweaked a bit toward yellow and magenta, but it seems like it wasn't enough! I will experiment with stronger settings.

Thank you!

Gabriel,

I love these images. Very nice indeed. Hmm, not sure I agree with them being dark, dont lose the contrast. I hate HDR images with a passion (the poorly done ones) so not too much shadow lifting :)

How do you like the camera? I am going to buy my girlfriend one I think. Can you post a full size image or even part of an image?

Have you heard of the orton effect / technique? If not try it on the bottom imgae, its perfect for it. Basically duplicate your final layer, gaussian blur the top layer, 50px maybe on full size image, overdo the contrast, blow the highlights and dont overdo the shadows too much, then set blending mode to normal and reduce opacity to 12% ish maybe 16%... Gives it a little glow... You will probably reply and say you did this already :)

Hi, thanks for commenting!

The camera is very pleasant to use. Incredible video quality, and very good still image quality, even when compared to larger sensors.

You will instantly notice more noise in every image, even at ISO 100, but it's perfectly acceptable. I've taken a couple of images at ISO 6400 that still look very good. The versatility of the 24-600mm lens is incredible. It's all there. The only thing I miss from my DSLRs is absolute low light photography and bokeh.

Overall, it's a very nice camera.

Speaking of the orton effect, It's funny that you say that, these two images were my first tests with this effect ever. I'm still using it very lightly, maybe I could up the opacity a little bit. I will definitely experiment with it further!

Regarding full size shots, I'll reply to you again in a few hours, when I get home, and send you a few full resolution samples. Keep in mind that I'm an avid Photoshop user, so these shots are quite different from the RAW file. I can send those to you too, if you want.

Here are some full size samples.

Feel free to ask more questions, or request the RAW files.

On my screen, the lower-left green slope of #1 pic looks somewhat unusual to me.

Hi!

Unusual in what way?

unusual green color. The other green parts of the same pic are natural to me.

Where is this?

Thanks! This is in Brazil, in a city called Canela.

I've almost finished edited my photos, and I'll create a thread with more pictures and a short review.
