I already have the Olympus 12-100 f4 and have commented on this forum it is the sharpest zoom lens I have ever used. Sharp wide open at every focal length right into the corners.

It simply has no weaknesses as far as sharpness. I use it on an Olympus Pen F.

I decided I wanted to get the new Panasonic Leica 12-60 to use more as an indoor lens because of its shorter range and smaller and lighter weight.

Now please understand this is MY experience with MY copy of the lens.

I was very disappointed in the lens. It was not sharp at all in corners with a "smearing" effect at almost all focal lengths other than at 60 mm.

The lens was adequate in the corners at 60mm but not what I would consider sharp.

I will say the lens was sharp at all focal lengths in the center but was very surprised how poorly it performed in the corners.........and I don't mean extreme corners.

Even in the center however it was not as sharp as the Olympus 12-100.

What also was disconcerting was there was not a consistency to the weak corners.

By that I mean at different focal lengths it would vary between being sharper on the left side compared to the right.

That of course sounds like it could be a decentered lens.

Whatever the reason after a few hours of testing the lens very carefully there was no way I was going to keep the lens.

It is already on its way back (to an authorized store seller).

Please do not attack the messenger! As stated this was my experience with my copy of the lens. Others may have perfectly acceptable samples of this lens that they are happy with.

What this experience did for me however was to now know I have no interest in getting this lens even if it was exchanged for a better performing one.

My Olympus 12-100 is definitely bigger and heavier but its performance is so outstanding I simply now am willing to accept its additional size and weight.

And of course you took a few sample shots to demonstrate how horrible is 12-60...

Your findings match what I saw with other sample shots. Poor performance in the corners at shorter fl's, better from 40mm up. Of course there is sample variation, but I have yet to see a review that shows the consistency center to corner that the 12-100 has. The lens is just out though, there will be many more reviews to come. Then a general impression of strenghts and weaknesses will emerge.

12-100 didnt look any better than my sony zoom, i returned the 12-100 immediately... sony was lighter too. ;)
I doubt that. Unless your Sony zoom is the G-master.

Thanks for posting your impressions and experiences. Bad news that this lens might not live up to expectations.

Have you found any reviews besides Ephotozine? I haven't yet. Thanks

In order to, form an informed opinion, I would have to see sample images for myself. As presented, the negative blurb of a review is to me meaningless.
For an informed opinion, I would have to test the two lenses for myself.

I wouldn't depend on another's camera settings, possible user error, or subject matter that I wouldn't be interested in photographing.

I can't comment on the 12-60 and don't want to comment on OP's lack of evidence in his opinion of it - but having just got a 12-100, I can definitely speak to that lens's prowess. It's certainly the best zoom lens I've ever used - never mind one with an 8x range and IS that works to 6 stops (in conjunction with IBIS). Truly amazing.

I'd like it to be a tad smaller, but I can live with that. Would you kick Adriana Lima out of bed for dropping toast crumbs in it?

I went to ephotozine's review and looked for actual images that would show the center and edges so that one could possibly compare them.

The only image where this was fairly detailed with edges and center approximately the same distances was the English Country Garden - in the middle of the sample images - 20mm, f5.6, ISO 400, 1/500.

You can click the High Resolution below the image for the full resolution image. You can then judge for yourself for this lens.

I did as you suggested (downloaded the file to my PC and looked at it using FastStone viewer at 100%), and my impression is that the right hand side edge is not as sharp as the left hand side edge, which itself is only a bit behind the center.

Fair enough - but totally useless information to anyone else without examples. Surely you MUST be able to post at least ONE comparative example if there is any truth in what you say?
