Just_received the 1.4x III for birding.
Did some test shots (100 crops). The first 2 are handhold shots.

The last 3 are on tripod. f8. iso 100. aperture 160, cropped the center part

1) without the 1.4, at 400. (best results of course) at 10 feet away from the wall.

2) with the 1.4 at 368mm at 10' away. (intended at 286x1.4mm=400) (notice the lower left corner is slightly blur. The Safteway bag has a pattern of some kind ).

3) with the 1.4 at 560mm. Moved the tripod from 10' to 14' , so what's shown in the view finder is similar as 400mm at 10'. (notice the lower left corner is slightly blur, but better than 2). The Safteway bag has less pattern. Due to compress?)

I expect some IQ degrading with the 1.4. *This is what you expected results*?

Honestly, without comparing with the no 1.4 case, I am pretty happy to have the extender for birding at some IS loss.

DPREVIEW seems show darker picture and some loss in IQ.

I think the 1.4 is worthwhile on this lens, but I am curios of other opinions. The 1.4xIII makes it harder to keep the bird in the viewfinder. The hawks do not want me any closer though.

This one was taken handheld out the car window with the car running. I barely got the car stopped in time.

I did considerable processing with an emphasis on saturating the colors, and trying to make the sky more blue to contrast it with the white feathers.
