Anyone taking advantage of the Adorama trade-in deals?

Saw this today, was wondering if anyone has taken advantage of the deal and if so, on what and what kind of total value you were getting. I'm considering possibly upgrading to the A7RII since now it seems obtainable, but I don't really deal with Adorama much so I'm not sure what my end trade will be, or if this trade is valid with multiple devices, etc.

Adorama offering too low prices to even bother... you will get more on Craigslist from some local dude who will be buying to use ...

Do you have any experience with what their trade ins are? I don't want to mail my stuff to them for an appraisal just to find out it's worthless

dear, they (Keh, Adorama, B&H, you name it) are reselling your gear for a good profit - that says it all... if you want to get a decent money then sell to the actual users, albeit yes - it might take some (or a lot) more time... is it difficult to post on craigslist ? I for example even do not offer to go & meet buyers - people have to come to my office where I work and when I am not busy and I was not negotiating the prices at all (take it or leave it) and yet I sold all my m43 gear (E-M1, GH3, lenses, speedlites) couple of years back in a Rust Belt area even it took me several month to do this... but to send to Keh or Adorama for peanuts ? over my dead body.

I'm aware of selling on craigslist and have done it many times. :)

I realize how retail world works, however, since there is currently an advantageous trade in offer going on, I was looking to know if it was advantageous to pursue.

How is that the case? Adorama are offering up to $480 off the A7RII if you send in a trade, PLUS you get around 70% of the expected re-sale value of that trade

Looks like sony is doing leaps and hoops throwing everything they can to assure more people buy into their camera system! Applaud them for their efforts really.

I am not sure why some members are doing math based on "bad" trade-in value.

As an example, you can buy this on ebay for $149.00:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-Alpha-...494724?hash=item361100bbc4:g:a94AAOSwopRYg-ku

and trade it in for $480-$149 for a net trade-in savings of of $331 (assuming Adorama or B&H give you $0 for trade in). This was based on a quick 1 min search of items eligible for trade-in and then checking their eBay prices.

Bottom line, you don't have to trade in your nice equipment for low-ball prices - sell the nice stuff on CL and buy the crappiest eligible trade-in from eBay and use that for the trade-in offer. Yes, you don't get the $full 480 "back", but can still get significant savings.

$331 net trade-in + $300 instant rebate = $661 total off, not bad.

Now if $331 is not worth it then obviously you wouldn't be asking this question.

EDIT: I checked on B&H and they are offering ~$35 for the A230+18-55 for the trade in value. So about $350 NET trade-in savings. Not bad.

I might be tempted to send in my old NEX-7 and get a brand spanking new A7ii for $1243 ($1698 - $200 instant discount - $255 trade-in bonus) minus a few extra bucks I'd get from the actual trade-in. Say: $1200 when all is done. Very tempting...

Clean NEX-7 bodies seem to be going for about $300 on eBay. That's about what I'd get with this "trade-in bonus" offer. Except my old NEX-7 is well-used so it would probably auction off for much lower. And I'd have to take a bunch of listing photos, write up a detailed description and deal with all the bidders.

Sounds like at least in this instance, Sony's trade-in bonus program would net me more money for less hassle. (YMMV...)

Not that complicated, really. If Sony's bonus is more than the difference between the store's trade-in offer and market value (also factor in effort to sell), you come out ahead. The cheaper the trade-in, the more likely it is this will be the case.

I once saw an older lady take-in a Leica R3 and 3 lenses to a local camera store. They gave her $150.00 for it... Trade-ins are for the well-heeled or suckers in most cases.

The big buyers of used gear B&H, Adorama will pay you nothing for your gear. Just for example I was quoted this week by B&H for the Sony 85mm 1.4 GM lens - box, hood, everything in EX+ condition $700 - they also wouldn't move on that price saying that already had 6 on hand that weren't moving anywhere. B&H in my experience has always been the lowest offer of the main spots. KEH has usually been a lot better but still - you trade convenience and ease with a loss in what you'll make selling privately.

I'm still a little confused about how this deal works. (The phrase "up to" $480 includes the number 0. ;-))

Let's say someone is trading in a clean A7ii towards an A7Rii. What kind of credit can one expect for the A7ii?

(I'm assuming about $600 for the camera, PLUS $480 Sony promotional credit bonus... plus (here's where I'm confused) an additional 10% bonus for trading in one of the current Sony A7 cams??? Just looking for clarification, if anyone has figured this out...

All the trade in bonus figures can be found here: https://www.adorama.com/g/SonyTrade-In?utm_source=rflaid64367

The trade-in on your used gear will be up to or around 70% of the current used resale value

So, in my example, the bonus would be $480 plus 70% of the current used resale value of the A7ii. Is there any other value added for trading in an A7ii, A7Sii, or A7Rii, as opposed to some other model of camera like a Nikon D40? (Someone claimed there is an extra benefit for trading in one of these current A7 cameras... but I am unclear on this point.)

I'm sorry, but I have no way of knowing; - The way the value is established is by using a calculation which takes into account the number of exact same units (of the same grade) in the warehouse at the time of your trade; the average number of that exact same unit in stock over the past 6 months; the average selling price of the unit over the past 6 months and projected decreases in the pre-owned market in the coming months due to new models becoming available. That gives them the ‘value’.

Okay, I understand that you cannot peg an exact value of my trade-in camera, which would probably be my A7ii, in a forum post.

My question relates to trading in one of the 3 featured cameras. Someone said there is a 10% bonus if the camera traded in is an A7ii, A7Rii, or A7Sii. This would be my situation if I trade in my A7ii towards the purchase of an A7Rii.

If I understand correctly, there is no 10% bonus.

My experience with either Adorama or B&H, can't remember which but I'm sure they both do this. I had a couple of Canon L lenses (both zooms) that I called the company for a trade in quote. He gave me a great price on the two lenses so off they went. A few days later he called and quoted a price way way way lower than the first contact. Now I'm between a rock and hard place, don't want them back as I sold the Canon DSLR but between us two we horse traded for a medium priced P/S camera (Canon M as I remember). I guess I really made his day, ruined mine.

Don't know if companies have cleaned up this bait and switch with quoted prices but I'm not going to find out again, Ebay has been the best place to quickly sell unused stuff if you give a halfway decent discount. I see stuff for sell (used) where they want nearly brand new prices, why would I go for that when I can get new from B&H when they have a great return policy if your not happy, Ebay could get messy for returns.

Let the buyer beware! Remember they are in business to maximize profits at your expense.

Rant over, I feel better now, having a cup of coco. :-D

I'm trekking up to NYC from Philly tomorrow, so I'll see what's up and if I can work out a deal. Hopefully, it all works out. 'm very prepared to start working with the A7RII.
